New Delhi From better security measures to inmate-friendly steps, the authorities of Tihar Jail claimed to have initiated adequate steps to make it a world-class jail.

Director General (Prisons), B K Gupta said if compared to last year, the Tihar Jail has achieved a lot right from lowering mortality rate to solving the problem of overcrowding. This year, the jail recorded the lowest mortality rate with 13 inmate deaths.

According to Gupta, the construction of another jail at Mandoli with a capacity of 3,600 prisoners is likely to be completed by November 2010 at a cost of Rs 169 crore. The Delhi High Court is speeding up the transfer of land for two more jails at Narela and Bapraula. The jail authorities are also taking steps on the security front. “Around 200 more CCTV cameras and four more mobile phone jammers will be installed in the next few months,” said Gupta.

The armoury is also being upgraded with the acquisition of INSAS Rifle, which are considered to be more effective than the existing weapons.

The jail, in association with Indraprastha Gas Limited, has also introduced the Pipe Natural Gas (PNG) in the entire jail complex replacing the LPG system. “During riots in the jail in 1991, cylinders were misused, but with PNG in place, such incidents will vanish,” Gupta added.
