Mohali Mohali Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Jatinder Singh Aulakh has claimed that the year 2008 was a year of achievements for the district police. He said that the police made record recoveries of arms, ammunitions, narcotics, liquor and stolen property during this period. Aulakh took over as the SSP of the district in June.

He stated that during 2008, the district police recovered over 4 kgs of cocaine worth over Rs 4 crore in the international market, with the arrest of a gang of a dozen smugglers. These included a serving Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) of Haryana, and couple of other Haryana and Rajasthan police officers.

Mohali police arrested nearly 65 persons under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act in 2008, as compared to 45 apprehended under similar charges in 2007. Nearly six kilograms of opium, worth over Rs 6 crore, was recovered last year. In 2007, over three kilos of opium was seized.

Superintendent of Police (Detective) RK Bakhshi told Newsline, that notorious gangster Ravinder Singh alias Chhanga was arrested following a police encounter, but he managed to escape from Patiala Central Jail. The district police again arrested Chhanga within 20 days, along with his two accomplices.

He added that the recovery of stolen properties doubled, with over Rs 2.52 crore stolen properties seized from 272 thieves arrested in 2008, as compared to over Rs 1.26 crore recoveries of stolen properties made from 270 persons in 2007. Property worth Rs 4.27 crore was reported stolen last year as compared to over Rs 5.05 crore properties stolen in 2007. “Vehicle thefts and snatchings remain our main challenges for 2009 during which we will focus on various ways and means to track down the bandits on prowl,” said the SSP.
