‘21,436 foreigners arrive in city, only 707 registered with FRO branch’

Chandigarh, January 8 Following the case of an Uzbek girl, first claiming rape and then retracting from her statement at Hotel North Park, Panchkula; the Chandigarh Police have compiled a record of foreigners visiting Chandigarh and staying in 2007. According to the police records, 21,436 foreign tourists visited Chandigarh in 2007, out of which a mere 707 got themselves registered with the Foreigners Registration Office (FRO) branch of Chandigarh Police at Police Headquarters, Sector 9, Chandigarh.

According to the officials of FRO branch, Chandigarh, it was learnt that any foreigner arriving in India on a valid visa, if wants to stay in a city of his/her choice for more than 48 hours, he/she needs to get himself/herself registered with the FRO branch of the concerned UT/ state. From the figures, it was assessed that 707 foreigners stayed in Chandigarh for more than 48 hours and got themselves registered with the FRO branch.

The records maintained by the Chandigarh Police also revealed that out of the 707 foreigners, 685 foreign tourists left for their respective countries and the rest moved back to New Delhi.

“We maintain a proper record of the foreigners arriving in the city. All hotels, guesthouses and inns have already been instructed to intimate the concerned police station, immediately, whenever a foreigner comes and stays at their place. The hotel staff is also suppose to maintain a proper register and record the passport number of the tourist staying in the hotel. C-forms are to be filled up by the hotel, which is duly checked by police station personnel,” said Deputy Superintendent of Police (CID) Satbir Singh.
