The deceased has been identified as 22-year-old Gurpreet Singh alias Billu, a resident of Kundan Puri Mohalla.

He had around a dozen criminal cases registered against him, including attempt to murder, assault an forcible recovery of money.

Sources said an old rivalry between the two groups is stated to be the reason for the murder. Division Number 8 police have registered a murder case against six people including one Rocky of Kundan Puri, his brother Mintu, one Mandal of Nakodar, Lovely of Haibowal, Kali, Maddi and some unidentified assailants.

The incident occurred on Monday night around 11.30 pm when Billu and his brother Jaswinder Singh had gone to a dhaba in Gol market near the Do Moria bridge.

Sources said more than half a dozen youths carrying swords and sharp-edged weapons approached attacked Billu. Seeing his brother being attacked, Jaswinder raised an alarm. People gathered at the spot and started pelting the assailants with cold drink bottles and chased them away, said sources. Billu was rushed to CMC Hospital in dhaba owner’s car. He, however, died in the hospital early on Tuesday.
