Chandigarh A 22-year-old man lost his life when a speeding Scorpio car coming from the opposite side flung into the air after colliding with a road divider and landed on the victim’s Maruti car. The incident occurred on the road dividing Sectors 36 and 42 in the early hours of Tuesday. The victim, Kapil Randhawa, was a resident of Sector 44. He was a photographer.

“The police faced difficulty in pulling the victim out of the badly mangled car. He had sustained multiple injuries,” said a police officer.

According to the police, Kapil was returning home after dropping a friend in Dadumajra colony around 1.30 am. “The Scorpio was being driven by Sandeep Kumar (32), a resident of Sector 37 who runs a shop in Attawa, under the influence of liquor. He was driving rash and lost his balance over the vehicle before colliding with the road divider,” an eyewitness told the police.

Officers said they immediately reached the spot after receiving a call. They rushed Kapil to the Government Multi-Specialty Hospital in Sector 16 from where he was referred to the PGI after his condition deteriorated. He succumbed to his injuries after reaching the PGI.

The police said they arrested Sandeep, who had escaped with minor injuries. His medical examination report confirmed that he was drunk. He was later granted bail.

“I was so drunk that I don’t even remember at what speed I was driving my vehicle and at what time did it collide with the divider. What I remember is the impact of the collision,” Sandeep told the police.

Sardari Lal, father of the victim, said: “Kapil had gone to drop his friend home after celebrating Lohri. He said he would be back soon but what we received was the news of his accident,” he said. Eldest of three siblings, Kapil ran his photography business from Sector 22.
