Kolkata, February 29 It took almost a month for the Left Front to condemn the February 5 police-firing incident in Dinhata that killed five Forward Bloc supporters.

At a meeting of the Front chaired by CPM leader Biman Bose, a resolution was adopted condemning the incident that had strained the relationship between the Bloc and the CPM.

“We condemn the firing in which five Forward Bloc supporters were killed,” Bose said. Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, Forward Bloc leader Ashok Ghosh and others were present at the meeting.

The war of words between the Bloc leaders and the CPM, post the incident, had led to fuelling of rumours that the former may bid adieu to the Front ahead of the panchayat elections. The CPM had also protested a statewide bandh call of the Bloc. Later, the state government accepted the Bloc’s demand for a judicial inquiry into the incidents.

Twenty-four days after the incident the CPM leaders also gave nod to Bloc’s another demand of severe punishment against guilty police officers. Earlier, the CPM had blamed the Bloc supporters for attacking police that led to the latter resort to firing.

Sources said that Bhattacharjee has assured the Bloc leaders that once the judicial inquiry report is submitted he would accordingly take action against the offenders. The judicial commission is slated to submit its report after six months.
