According to Sports Minister Mani Shankar Aiyar, out of these, 8,700 would alone be required for traffic controls, both human and of the vehicular kinds. The Delhi Police would need these for traffic regulation, management of pedestrian flow, security supports, help desk, frisking, queue formation and parking assistance.
Volunteers from colleges, NCC, NSS, and Scouts and Guides would be selected and trained, and a committee formed to do the same. The minister also said that Delhi Police will undergo a special training programme too, to make sure they are on their best behaviour during the big event. A three-month trial class has already been organised successfully in this regard, Aiyar said.
Starting this month, 40,000 police personnel are proposed to be imparted training under a capsule course of one year.
The Delhi Traffic Police is already organising training programmes for personnel working at key locations in association with Delhi Tourism and India Tourism Development Corporation. There are plans to train drivers of three-wheelers, taxis and buses as well, Aiyar added.
