Surat She was always fond of motorbikes. When she could not buy one, she decided to steal. Once it started, there was no end. And 25-year-old Harsha Patel fell into the habit of stealing motorcycles, not only from Surat city, but also from Olpad.

The police caught her on Wednesday with three stolen motorcycles. Apparently, the girl used to sell the stolen vehicles to maintain her lifestyle.

The Olpad police caught Harsha near the vegetable market in Olpad taluka on Wednesday night, during patrolling. She failed to produce necessary documents of the vehicle when demanded, following which, she was picked up for questioning. She broke down during interrogation and confessed to her crime. Two more motorcycles were recovered from her.

Harsha, a resident of Karshan Street in Olpad, dropped out of school after her father Magan Patel died when she was in standard VII. She was very much attracted to motorcycles and loved riding them. She started working in different places in Olpad and also learnt from her mechanic friend how to start a motorcycle without keys. But when her mother Bhavna learnt about her involvement in vehicle stealing, she was thrown out from home. Harsha stayed at different places in Olpad and Surat and continued stealing motorcycles.

The police also got names of two youths who were purchasing motorcycles from her. Couple of months ago, Harsha got married to Denish Christian, a resident of Nadiad on November 16, 2008. She stayed with her husband for two days after which she decamped with gold ornaments and cash. Denish lodged a police complaint in this connection.

“I had no money. I married Denish only to meet my expenses. But I wanted to live a carefree life, which is why I escaped from his house with jewellery and cash. I returned to Olpad and took a house on rent,” she told the police.

Sub-Inspector H M Suthar said: “Her modus operandi is such that she dons an artificial beard and moustache while stealing. Two years ago, we had caught her with stolen motorcycles. We are investigating the case to find out if there are more heads in the case.”
