Mumbai Faheem Ansari and Sabauddin, the two Indians accused in the November 26 terror strikes in Mumbai, have requested a local court to translate the 11,000-page chargesheet file into Urdu.

The duo made this request before a metropolitan magistrate on March 6 stating that the chargesheet filed by the Mumbai crime branch is in English and Marathi, which the two do not understand.

The magistrate will pass an order on the request on Monday.

Mohammad Ajmal Amir Kasab, the lone terrorist caught alive in the 26/11 attack, is also likely to make a similar request, sources said.

If the court accepts the request then the crime branch will have to first comply with the order after which the case will be committed to the special court set up inside the high security Arthur Road prison.

"If the magistrate directs the prosecution to translate the chargesheet in Urdu, then that will have to be complied with before the case is committed to the sessions court," special public prosecutor Ujwal Nikam said.

The crime branch had on February 25 filed a 11,000-page chargesheet against 38 accused in connection with the audacious terror strikes that killed over 170 persons.

Out of the 38 accused, 35 Pakistani nationals and operatives of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) have been shown as wanted.

Among them include Zaki-ur-Rehman Laqvi, Yousif Muzammil, Abu Kafa, Abu Ramza and Zarar Shah. It also includes names of two suspected army men -- Major General Saab and Colonel R Saadat Ullah.

The accused have been charged under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including waging war against the nation and criminal conspiracy, and under the Foreigners Act, Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, Arms Act, Explosives Act and Customs Act.

The trial will be conducted in a special court set up inside the Arthur Road prison, which will be presided by Judge M L Tahilyani.

Kasab, Faheem and Sabauddin are currently lodged inside the Arthur Road jail.

On November 26, 2008, a group of ten terrorists had attacked various locations in the city such as Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, Hotels Taj and Trident and Nariman House.

Nine out of those terrorists were killed in a stand-off with the security forces.

One more way to play with system by Imran on 16 Mar 2009

Great... One more way to play with our Indian judicial system.... we all know that if this case will start then will never end and even if by mistake it end then I am quite sure it will take 20 years for judgement and may be till that time some of them will already get die or on verge to die.

Cellphone ? by Ram on 09 Mar 2009

Was their cellphone in Urdu ? How could they read who was calling them ? In such cases where millions have watched these terrorists on TV, there should be no trial. Just chop them off, the Halal way.

No Urdu in India by Jay on 09 Mar 2009

If you cannot understand english and marati, ask for hindi. Urdu is in no way connected to India and this request is just an attempt to sideline the main issue.

Urdu is definitely an Indian language by Pranab on 09 Mar 2009

Remember the film titles used to be shown in 3 languages when you were young?Urdu is as Indian as Hindi. Marathi is not pan-Indian, but it is the regional language of the area where the attacks took place. And English is the official language of the court. This diversity is the greatness of India, so don't demean it by a narrow view.Every accused has the right to a fair trial. Their punishment should be fair, in accordance with existing law, and commensurate with the magnitude of the crime. Also, bear in mind this is a chargesheet - they are not criminals but merely 'accused' at this stage. Until they are proven guilty please do not treat them otherwise. If we don't treat these according to established law, we are setting a bad precedent which will only end up infringing on our own rights in the future. Today if you vilify these people before the trial and before the law proves them guilty, tomorrow you might be vilified if you are arrested mistakenly.Let the law take its due course. The Indian justice might be slow, but it should be Just.

Legal Language by Avinash Baranwal on 09 Mar 2009

The question is, before presenting those papers , didn't officials bothered to check the culprit's known language? This is not a unique incident. The legal and police offcials are also a waste.

Hang these traitors! by Ajay on 09 Mar 2009

Hang these traitors, deport their families to Pakistan, confiscate their properties, and distribute their property and wealth to the victims of terrorism and their families!

TRASH! by James Mahomed on 08 Mar 2009

The two accused represent the trash that breeds in India. It is in the interest of the nation that such trash is disposed quickly without fanfare as they carry abad stink. These are essentially Pakisani agents and should be treated as such.Efforts should be made to eliminate the other Indians involved in handling and breeeding the trash.

OUR COUNRY IS SUBORDINATE TO TERRORISTS? by B S GANESH on 08 Mar 2009

The idea of the accused is to gain more time and by that time some more terrorists can attack. There is need for urgent actiion on such reports. Our country appears to be subordinate to terrorists. This is my frank feelings B S GANESH

manipulative, stirring and abusive terrorists by beljamine on 08 Mar 2009

this is how terrorists start to maipulate the laws of the land. authorities must not allow themselves to be bogged down in this for the sake of the security of india. in any case terrorists have no rights. human rights orgs- should stay away. it's the rights of the majority to live in peace against no rights for terrorists. countries which live far from pakistan cannot understand the infiltration problem of india
