Kolkata, April 7 A team of officers from the Kolkata police and Railway Protection Force rescued a two-year-old boy after he was kidnapped from near his residence at Rajabazar on Monday. One Sukhanandan Mondol was arrested in connection with the abduction.

Son of Mohammed Ershad and Zaheera Bibi, Mohammed Imran is a resident of Chamru Singh Lane in Rajabazar area. The incident occurred around 11 am when Imran was playing outside his house. After some time, when Zaheera came out of the house to check on him, Imaran was missing. Neighbours told her a man picked up Imran some time ago.

A frantic Zaheera raised an alarm and ran towards Rajabazar crossing, the direction that the alleged kidnapper had taken. There she spotted Imran and Mondol and chased them along with the locals. But he managed to flee with Imran. Zaheera then informed Ershad of the incident. The duo, along with other locals, lodged a complaint at the Narkeldanga police station. Officers at the Narkeldanga police station informed the control room at Lalbazar of the incident. All 48 police stations in the city were alerted. Railway stations in Howrah, Sealdah and NSC Bose Airport were also alerted.

Around 1.30 pm, RPF personnel in Sealdah detained Mondol and Imran based on the description given by Zaheera to the police. A team of officers from the Narkeldanga police station went to Sealdah station and rescued Imran.

“We are interrogating him. We think he has given us a false name. The man may be linked to child trafficking rackets operating in Kolkata,” said an officer of Narkeldanga police station. “We are investigating whether the man has links with any trafficking rackets,: said Parthosarathi Ghosh, deputy commissioner of police (eastern sub-urban division).
