The case was registered on the complaint of Jasbir Singh, a resident of Mahalan, near Sangat Mandi in Bathinda. He claimed to have paid Rs 3 lakh out of Rs 4 lakh-- the amount for which the deal was struck-- to accused Manjit Singh Dhillon and Dr Sudhir Verma and middleman Jagdev Singh of Malkana village.
According to the police, Jasbir, in his complaint, had alleged that Jagdev Singh, one of his relatives, introduced him to Dhillon and Dr Verma. "Jagdev introduced Dhillon as a Chief Ticket Inspector in Railways, who was 'well-connected'," police quoted Jasbir as saying in the complaint.
According to the police, Jasbir was called to a park at Talwandi Sabo on January 28, where he paid Rs 3 lakh to Dhillon and Dr Verma through Jagdev, who had told him that he would also be getting his daughter recruited through them.
Later, when Jasbir showed the documents he was given by the accused to the Railway, he was told that they were bogus.
The police said Jasbir claimed that there were about five more people who gave money to the accused for jobs. According to Harbans Singh Riar, in charge of the Economic Offences Wing, to which the case has been now handed over for further investigation, initially it appeared to be a Rs 18-lakh scam. "It could be even more as over 10 persons have reportedly given money to the accused so far," he said. No arrests were made so far.
