Kharar A security guard and his two sons were sentenced to imprisonment for seven months in jail for pushing their 94-year-old neighbour Mansa Singh in Santemajra village in August 2008.

While Gurmeet Singh (55) was arrested on Saturday evening, his sons Jaswinder Singh and Balwinder Singh, are still at large, Additional Station House Officer Sub-Inspector Gurbax Ram told Newsline. He said Gurmeet and the two youths had allegedly pushed Mansa after a minor altercation on August 10, 2008, following which he broke his hip joint. Mansa was admitted to the PGI where he died on August 16. The trio were then booked on charges of murder.

The post-mortem report, however, indicated that Mansa had died of pneumonia. The chemical examination of the deceased’s viscera later established that Singh died “due to pneumonia”. But this failed to satisfy the police, who sought legal opinion on the matter.

The police later replaced the murder charges with charges of culpable homicide, under Section 304 of the Indian Penal Code, Ram said.

He added that the search for the two accused is on while Gurmeet Singh will be produced before a local court on Sunday.
