Kolkata, May 2 Three people were seriously injured in a road accident at Behala around 11.30 on Thursday night.

Uma Shankar Yadav, Mantu Mondol and Sanjib Singha were heading towards Behala on a motorcycle when the accident occurred. As they were approaching the Pathakpara crossing, their motorcycle skidded on the stone chips scattered on the road and fell into a ditch. They were rushed to the neighbouring Vidyasagar Hospital. The accident sparked protests as locals blocked the road for hours after the incident.

Such accidents are not uncommon in Behala. The roads in this area are perennially in a bad condition owing to the prolonged work carried out by Kolkata Environmental Improvement Project (KEIP). Come monsoon, the condition of the roads deteriorates further.

Every important connector in Behala — whether it is James Long Sarani or the road connecting Siriti to Karunamoyee — has been left open by KEIP contractors.

In most of these areas, KEIP has adopted the cut and open method to lay the underground pipelines.

To add to the commuter’s nightmare, there are holes as deep as 20 feet for laying the pipelines. These spots have led to several road accidents in recent times.
