The notification, which had been sent to all educational institutions, states that a student, if caught smoking, will be fined Rs 500 for the first offence and the same would rise subsequently. While smoking is common in boys’ hostels and there have been instances where students have been caught violating the ban, when it comes to making official data, the faculty seems to find no offender.
Talking to Newsline, Jatinder Kumar Goswami, warden of Hostel Number 2, where the lone challan was issued said: “There have been many instances where we have caught students and have fined them. However, only one student has been issued a challan till yet. We generally tackle the boys on our own.”
Gurmeet Singh, warden of Hostel number 6, meanwhile, says: “We come across boys smoking in the hostels, but the number has really gone down. Most of the hostels now counsel students and regular checks have ensured that the number of students smoking has gone down.” When Newsline tried to contact the wardens of the seven boys’ hostels at the PU, it was found that only one challan had been issued till yet. Sources, meanwhile, say there are instances where students are caught smoking, but most of the times, they are let off after a warning.
