In 2004, the number of voters recorded in the state was 3.36 crore. Ever since there has been an increase of 29 lakh voters.
Releasing the final electoral roll, state Additional CEO Ashok Manek told reporters that the names of over 4.51 lakh voters across Gujarat were deleted from the list during a thorough scrutiny, including 1.23 lakh from Ahmedabad. The names were deleted as the voters were either found to have shifted to other places or reported dead.
Among the districts, Surat registered the highest increase in the number of voters– 53,222, followed by Gandhinagar (12,997), Banaskantha (10,010), Kutch (8,725) and Vadodara (8,681).
As per the Parliamentary constituency-wise status of the final roll, Navsari accounts for the biggest electorate (16,17,095), followed by Gandhinagar (15,43,207),Vadodara (15,15,289), Surendranagar (14,71,028) and Sabarkantha (14,48,382).
Manek said that of the total 3.63 crore voters enrolled across the state, over 3.35 crore were already issued election photo identity cards (EPICs). “We have already covered 92.10 percent of the electorate under the EPIC campaign. We expect to achieve the target of 95 per cent before the LS polls,” he said, adding that the estimated expenditure on holding the elections in Gujarat would be Rs 73 crore. The expenditure in the 2004 polls was Rs 52 crore.
