Based on the study, Dr Ranjay Vardhan, a teacher of the Government College for Girls, has authored a book titled Single Women: A Study of Spinsters. The book was released today by Union Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal.
About one-third of the sample had professional degrees. In fact, the study states that career consciousness and education are the prominent reasons why women prefer to stay single. Some are influenced by the media and the women’s liberation movement to remain unattached. This is especially true for women in the upper strata of society.
Only eight per cent of the single women surveyed were not working. Economic independence is the reason why a large number took up jobs. Vardhan found out that most single women were tech savvy.
The workforce-participation rate among single women is relatively higher as they are responsible for financially supporting themselves as well as other family members. The women agreed that there was an improvement in their standard of living after their chose to remain single.
However, the picture is not all that rosy. The study states that the support system for such women is weak and they, because of their single status, are not fully accepted in mainstream society.
