Thane Four Nationalist Congress Party workers, one of them a minor, were killed after receiving electric shock during the preparation for a campaign procession in Kalwa area of Thane this morning.

To compound the tragedy, mother of two of the victims tried to commit suicide after hearing the news.

Police said the incident occurred at about 11.30 am in Shivaji Nagar locality, when the victims were preparing for procession of NCP candidate Mahesh Salvi.

Municipal Corporation polls are to be held in Thane on February 16.

As one of the workers raised a party flag tied to a metal pipe/stick, it came into contact with overhead electricity wire, passing down the current. He received a shock, so did others who tried to rescue him.

The deceased were identified as Ashok P Rajput (15), Ajay P Rajput (18), Anaya Rajput (22) and Pradip G Gupta (21).

Ashok and Ajay were brothers. When their mother heard about it, she tried to commit suicide by consuming poison, police said.

She has been admitted to Chhatrapati Shivaji Hospital at Kalwa.
