4 more die of spurious liquor, toll touches 10

Lucknow Four more persons died after consuming spurious liquor in Azamgarh on Sunday, raising the toll to 10 in the last two days. The condition of 15 others, who were admitted to the district hospital in Azamgarh, is said to be critical.

Following this, the state government on Sunday suspended two excise officers, including Azamgarh district excise officer Ram Chandra Sigh, on charges of negligence.This action was taken after the Excise department conducted a preliminary inquiry into the incident. Varanasi’s joint Excise commissioner has also been asked to conduct an investigation.

The district administration, besides announcing ex-gratia relief of Rs 1 lakh each to the kin of deceased, has also ordered an inquiry into the incident. They also clarified that the deceased did not consume poisonous meat of Siberian birds. The district police, on Saturday, had declared that the six people who died had consumed spurious liquor along with poisonous meat.
