Kolkata, July 31 The roof of the record room at Park Street police station collapsed, injuring four policemen.

Shajahan Chowdhury (42), a constable, and Banshi Naskar (50), a home guard, received serious injuries. They have been admitted to the Assembly of God Church Hospital.

Two assistant sub-inspectors — Tarit Kumar Pal and J P Mohanty — were also injured in the incident.

The record room was located in a separate building behind the police station. Although the room usually remained locked, on Thursday morning, the officers had entered the room, when the roof caved in.

The building was declared unsafe 10 years ago. But the public works department (PWD) and the police station took no step to remodel or reconstruct the affected portion.

The demolition team of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) pulled down the building.

“I visited the site and reviewed the condition of the building. I do not know whether the authorities wanted to repair it,” said Gopal Bhattacharya, Director, Fire and Emergency Services.

“Everybody knows about the insecure portion. Usually nobody enters the building. We also submitted a proposal to the concerned authorities for the remodelling of the building. But we are yet to receive any sanction. Generally, the remodelling process takes time,” said Deputy Commissioner (South) Rajesh Subarna.
