Lucknow, March 1 A 40-year-old man, who had allegedly raped a 5-year-old girl, was lynched by residents of Bhayara village under Jhangirabad police circle in Barabanki on Saturday morning.

The police said the medical report had confirmed rape.

Barabanki Superintendent of Police Praveen Kumar said: “The girl has been kept under observation in the hospital.”

The deceased Shageer, a native of Roti Gera village, was a history sheeter with 11 criminal cases pending against him, including attempt to murder and loot.

He had recently shifted to Bhayara.

According to the police, around 10.30 am on Saturday, Shageer saw the girl, daughter of Ram Naresh Rawat, playing outside her house.

He lured the girl with eatables into an open field near the house and reportedly raped her.

“The victim’s 14-year-old cousin brother reached the spot shortly and shouted for help. Farmers working in the fields rushed to the site and beat up Shageer,” said Station Officer Ashutosh Sharma of the Jhangirabad police station.

He added that the police took Shageer to the hospital but doctors declared him “dead on arrival.”
