Mumbai As many as 42 members of the Rashtriya Kamgar Sena and the Shiv Sena, including MLC Anil Parab and leaders like Sitaram Dalvi, Raju Patil and Raju Peglegar, were arrested on Wednesday by the Sahar police for rioting. The members of RKS were carrying out a demonstration outside the Intercontinental Hotel to protest against the hotel authorities’ decision to sack 21 employees for allegedly trying to join their union. Over 600 workers stood outside the hotel for four hours. Later, they became violent and broke the glass of the hotel since the hotel management didn’t communicate with them.

“They were protesting against the firing of some employees a year and a half ago. They sent a delegation today to meet the hotel management. But since the hotel management was not ready to meet them, they turned violent and broke the glass after going inside the hotel,” said Senior Police Inspector Dilip Patil of Sahar police station.

According to the president of the RKS, Gurunath Khot, “These employees used to work for 16 hours a day but were paid only for eight hours. But the hotel used to earn a lot. In six months, they fired 21 employees who tried to form a union. When we approached them, they were very angry saying that a union was being formed in the hotel. They also said we were pressurising them. On November 21, Anil Parab met the general manager who said he would address our issues in 10 days. But, they even refused to meet us after three months.” Commenting on the violence, he said, “That was a reaction for making us wait for four hours without giving any response.”
