Surat A 42-year-old diamond unit owner committed suicide by consuming poison on Thursday. With this, the number of deaths associated with the diamond industry in the last five months has reached 23. But this is the first instance of a unit owner ending his life.

Vajubhai Sutaria (42), a resident of Purvi society at Hirabaug in Varachha, had been running a diamond processing unit at Matawadi in Varachha. Sutaria, who belonged to Lathi taluka in Amreli district, had invested his savings in purchasing rough diamonds to meet the Christmas demand.

But with the meltdown hitting the industry, Sutaria’s old customers in the US did not make a single deal with him during Diwali. In the absence of any money, he had to close down his factory soon.

With his business gone, Sutaria faced umpteen difficulties in providing for his family of six. He even tried to find a job in a diamond factory, but failed.

On Thursday afternoon, he left home and went to the Kamnath Mahadev Temple ground in Kapodara and consumed poison. But before doing so, he informed his son Kishor about his step. Kishor immediately rushed to the spot with some friends and took his father to the nearby Ayush Hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival. Sutaria is survived by his wife Vasati, son Kishor and three daughters.

Sub-Inspector V K Bede of Kapodara police said: “Sutaria had come to Surat as a 15-year-old boy and started working as a cutter in a diamond factory. After gaining sufficient knowledge about the industry, he started a small factory in Matwadi area. He had invested his savings to meet the demand but it proved futile. This drove him to end his life. We are trying to find out if he had taken cash loans from his friends.”
