Though the fire inflicted damage on property, there was no report of any causalty. About 150 firemen and 13 officers of Fire Brigade were on their toes throughout the night attending the fire calls at several fire stations in the city.
“Since Friday afternoon, 45 fire accidents were reported in the city,” said Kartar Singh, Additional Divisional Fire Officer (ADFO), Ludhiana. He said Bathinda and Patiala reported minimum eight fire accidents — four from each place — on Diwali night.
All the fire accidents took place due to bursting of crackers. The major fire accidents were reported at Jyoti Metal Factory, on Sua road, and at Trankawala Bazar. At these two places, the fire was caught by waste material lying in the open.
The other incidents took place at Focal Point, Shobha; Phase-V, Focal Point; Hero Majestic; Surekh School of Arts, Civil Lines; Jaggi Khurana Furniture House on Chandigarh road; a house in Phullanwal, Prince Hostel, Nikkamal Road Chowk, Sarabha Nagar and Tagore Nagar.
While the loss of property is being assessed, the ADFO put it in lakhs. Last year, the number of such incidents was 16 in the city.
About 200 men from a training centre at Phillaur, 100 from a training centre at Hoshiarpur and two battalions from PAP were deployed to meet any eventuality in the city.
