Pune, February 5 A 45-year-old beggar from Uttar Pradesh was allegedly raped by a drunken passenger in the toilet of Goa-Nizamuddin Express around 11 pm on Monday.

Chandrakant Vithoba Jadhav (32) was nabbed and handed over to the Pune railway police by passengers when the train reached Pune railway station early Tuesday morning. Railway police said the victim was mentally-disturbed and earned her living by begging. Jadhav is a farmer from Madhwal village in Belgaum district of Karnataka.

Railway police inspector Narsingh Bhosale said Jadhav and his friend Sharad Appasaheb Patole (22) boarded the train at Miraj around 9.30 pm. Both of them had consumed liquor. Since they did not have reservation for the sleeper coach, they were moving across the train searching for some place to sleep when Jadhav accidentally brushed the victim who was sleeping near the door of bogie number nine.

As the victim shouted, Jadhav, who was under the influence of alcohol, allegedly dragged her inside the toilet between bogie number 9 and 10 and raped her. The train was running somewhere between Sangli and Karad at the time. Most of the passengers were fast asleep. However, Jadhav was nabbed and beaten up by some passengers who had woken after hearing the cries of this woman. The passengers however handed both Jadhav and his friend to the police when the train reached Pune railway station around 5 am, it was stated.

Police then sent the victim and the accused to Sassoon hospital for medical tests. Police said Jadhav was married to a woman from Wadgaonsheri in Pune. Due to some dispute, his wife had returned to her marital home two months back. Jadhav was coming to Pune for taking his wife back. Superintendent of Pune railway police Vitthal Jadhav said the case was transferred to the Miraj railway police as the incident took place in their jurisdiction. “The accused was sent to Miraj for further investigation. Besides, we would communicate with the Railway Police force (RPF) for increasing the security in trains,” he said.
