Vadodara, February 29 A 48-year-old man was stoned to death in Navibhat village in Halol in Panchmahals district early on Friday morning for reasons yet unknown. The Halol police said the victim, who was from another village was staying at his friend’s house, when some persons burst into the house and dragged him towards the nearby forest where they first pelted him with stones and then assaulted him with sticks and knives.

A complaint has been registered at the Halol Police Station. The police are now trying to determine the identity of the attackers.

The deceased has been identified as one Mohan Nayak, a daily wage labourer from Rukot village in the neighbouring Jambugoda taluka. He was staying at his friend, Narvat Nayak’s house, where he had gone on a visit.

It was Narvat who found Nayak body on Friday morning at around 9 am and immediately rushed him to a nearby doctor, who declared him dead. Narvat then informed the police and registered a complaint. The Halol police said that the gang barged into the house sometime between 2 am and 8 am and dragged Nayak away. They said the fact that they spared Narvat, hinted at some personal enmity.

Halol sub-divisional police officer P C Baranda said, preliminary investigations showed that around five men were involved in the assault. “We have some leads about the culprits, and combing operations are on in different parts of Halol. We hope to arrest the guilty by Friday night,” Baranda said.

Halol Sub-Inspector P R Shah said the police were conducting combing operations in villages around Navibhat, as they had evidence that the assailants were outsiders. Meanwhile, a police team has already been sent to Nayak’s hometown of Rukot, to try and determine the cause behind the attack.
