Kolkata The Special Task Force of Kolkata Police on Tuesday arrested three persons and detained another in connection with the seizure of 5,000 rounds of ammunition in liquor boxes in a vehicle near Sovabazzar in north Kolkata on Monday. The vehicle was coming from Patna and those who were held by police are also residents of Patna, said police.

“We have arrested the owner of the vehicle, Mahesh Singh, and two others — Ramprabesh Prasad and Rajesh Kumar Sharma. The receiver of the ammunition, Dilip Mishra, has also been detained and we are investigating his involvement in the case,” said Rajeev Kumar, Additional Commissioner of Police, STF.

According to a senior officer, Singh runs a shop of licensed guns in Patna and also owns a small media house there. The vehicle has been registered in his wife’s name. The official further said the bullets were manufactured in the Ordnance factory in Pune in March.

“Apart from the bullets, cash worth over Rs 2 lakh was recovered from the vehicle. We have communicated the incident to the Bihar Police and they also have started investigation the matter,” added the officer.

“The bullets were certainly for some terrorist groups active in the city. There is a possibility that Maoists were the final receivers of the ammunition. We are looking into the matter,” said Kumar.

According to sources, the vehicle was coming from Patna via Burdwan and it was approaching towards NH-2, Bombay Road. The police are yet to ascertain the destination of the vehicle.
