According to police, Trinamool supporters took out a huge rally to mark their statewide success in the municipal polls. While the rally was passing by the residence of local CPM leader Shaukat Ali at Manickpara, Trinamool supporters allegedly pelted stones at his house.
This morning, Shaukat Ali, along with around 100 CPM supporters, blocked Feeder Road in Dhanekhali in protest and tried to impose a bandh in local market, which a section of shop-owners owing allegiance to Trinamool opposed.
Soon, both sides were hurling bombs till a huge contingent of police arrived.
Five CPM workers, including Shaukat Ali, were critically injured and later admitted to Chinsurah Imambara Hospital.
“It was a minor incident, which suddenly took a different shape. We have deployed a huge contingent of policemen in the area to thwart further violence,” said Barun Mitra, officer-in-charge of Dhanekhali police station.
While Trinamool’s Hooghly district president Tapan Dasgupta blamed CPM’s “armed cadres” enforcing the bandh for the violence, CPM’s Dhanekhali zonal committee member Achintya Das said Trinamool “goons” attacked his party leaders without provocation.
Meanwhile, in a separate incident, armed clash broke out between CPM and BJP supporters at Nalhati in Birbhum district. Ten houses were set afire by the the hoodlums.
