Surat The Labour Department rescued 50 children working at zardozi units and tea stalls in different areas of the city on Friday evening. Most of the rescued children are boys, who belong to different districts of Bihar.

Acting on information, Labour Department officials, along with members of Pratham, an NGO working for the welfare of child labourers, carried out raids at five zardozi units at N Park and Shiv Shanker societies in Bhatena, and rescued 39 child labourers working there.

Raids were also conducted at various tea stalls and garages in Udhna area from where 11 children were rescued. The rescued children were taken to Bal Ashram in Katargam after completing the official formalities.

Assistant Labour Commissioner Kirit Patel said: “The majority of the rescued children are from Purniya district in Bihar. They had been employed at zardozi units for the last eight months, while some of them had been in Surat for the last two years.”

The average age of the rescued labourers is between 10 and12 years, Patel said, adding, “We took help of the local police while carrying out raids. The owners of the firms where these child labourers were working escaped.”
