All buses on four routes covering the length of the corridor will be replaced by the low-floor high capacity buses, according to the proposal by Delhi Integrated Multi-Modal Transport System (DIMTS), the special purpose vehicle in charge of implementing the bus corridor designed on the concept of segregated lane driving.
“The corridor has been designed for low-floor buses which have lower platforms and cannot go beyond 40 kmph,” a senior DIMTS official said. The bus routes identified in the first phase are 419, 423, 521 and 522.
“We cannot replace all Blueline and private buses instantly, so we are doing this gradually by first replacing the fleet of routes that mostly span the 5.6 km stretch,” he said.
Blueline bus operators along these routes will be given alternate routes till their permits are valid. DTC chairman Ramesh Negi said, “We have a fleet of 100 low-floor buses already plying through the city and will be inducting more by April. We will make sure that we have enough buses to manage the corridor.”
Meanwhile, private buses along 30 other routes passing through the stretch will be directed through the corridor.
“The purpose of the corridor is to have segregated lanes for buses and motorised vehicles. Private buses and Bluelines will have to follow rules of the corridor,” a DIMTS official said. Even school buses will be using the corridor, officials said.
Drivers who would drive on this route are being trained at the Institute of Driving Training and Research (IDTR) in Sarai Kale Khan and Loni. Special identity cards will be issued to these drivers, a senior official said.
“This training is mandatory to ensure safety. We have issued notices to Blueline operators to send their drivers for training,” the official said.
