50 years of Sardar Sarovar Project as on April 5, 2008

The Sardar Sarovar Project is an inter-state multidisciplinary project with a terminal dam on river Narmada at Kevadia in Gujarat. An annual irrigation of 17.92 lakh ha in Gujarat, 2.46 lakh ha in Rajasthan and hydel power generation of 1450 MW are proposed through SSP

Highlights:
* 1947-60: Planning and consultation with experts of Narmada Project for selection of areas suitable for construction of dam. The Sardar Sarovor Project began on April 5, 1961 even before Gujarat state was formed.
* 1961: The foundation stone of SSP was laid by Jawaharlal Nehru on April 5, 1961. The cost of the dam was expected to be around Rs 6,000 crore when the project began, which has now increased to around Rs 25,000 crores, according to Sardar Sarovar Narmada Nigam Limited officials.
* 1965-80: A N Khosla, Water Resources Division Council (WRDC) Chairman meets Madhya Pradesh (MP) and Maharashtra state governments to sign a memorandum on SSP. Rules and regulations on Narmada water resources and power generation were formulated between the four states that include Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Gujarat and Rajasthan.
* 1980's- Narmada Bachao Andolan began that brought into focus serious issues regarding SSP planning and rehabilitation of project affected people.
* 1994: March: Narmada Bachao Andolan sent a writ petition to Supreme Court
* 1995: March 5: Supreme Court's stay order on Sardar Sarovar Dam at the height of 80.30 m
* 1999: Supreme Court permits to increase the height of SSP from 80.30 to 85.0 m
* From 1999-2006- the height of Sardar Sarovar Dam increases from 85 m to 121.92 m as declared during Narmada Control Authority (NCA) meeting.
