* The Capital has 946 dispensaries
* Eleven hospitals—Attar Sain Jain, Baba Saheb Ambedkar, Babu Jagjivan Ram Memorial, Dr NC Joshi Memorial, Guru Gobind Singh Govt, Lal Bahadur Shastri, Maharishi Balmiki, Malviya Nagar Colony, Moti Nagar Colony, Patel Nagar Colony and Rao Tula Ram Memorial Hospitals—function under the Directorate of Health Services of the Delhi government
* There are 460 registered nursing homes under the DHS
* Central government-run hospitals like AIIMS, Dr R M L and Safdarjung Hospitals attend to about 50 lakh patients every year in their OPDs and perform more than 2 lakh operations
* Of the six major hospitals managed by MCD—Hindu Rao, Swami Dayanand, RBTB, Infectious Diseases, Kasturba and Mrs GL Maternity Hospital—two are general hospitals, one for Tuberculosis, one for infectious diseases, one for mother and child care and one for maternity respectively

* The MCD also has 50 dispensaries, two poly clinics, six colony hospitals and five primary health centres with 47 beds and 16 mobile dispensaries
* There are two ayurvedic hospitals with 140 beds, and 104 dispensaries; 19 homeopathy dispensaries and 15 unani dispensaries under the MCD
* There are two electric crematoria and seven major cremation grounds run by the MCD. 19 funeral vans are also available

* DNB (Diplomatae of National Board of Examination) courses are organised in MCD’s Hindu Rao Hospital and Kasturba Hospital in collaboration with Delhi University. In addition to this, MD and Diploma in Anaesthesia, Paediatrics and Obstetrics and Gynaecology are also organised. RBTB Hospital is also a teaching and training institution for MD (TB & chest) and DTCD
* MCD organises health care facilities during disasters, rallies, riots, sport meets, religious meet and national or state-level functions
* Several agencies are involved in medical and healthcare programmes but the health department of MCD is the main agency for providing preventive health care services, which include water-borne and vector-borne disease control programmes
* MCD has been implementing the World Bank-aided Indian Population Project since 1993 to provide welfare services to about 12 lakh slum dwellers through a network of six maternity homes, 21 health centres and 105 health posts
About Health schemes in the capital
* About 35 per cent of the population lives in slums and unauthorised colonies. 66 mobile dispensaries cover 420 slums in Delhi under the Mobile Health scheme
* The Delhi government health scheme launched in 1997 provides medical facilities to government employees and pensioners. Hospitals which provide free admission and treatment under the scheme are Lok Nayak, GB Pant, GTB, DDU, BJRM, LBS, Sanjay Gandhi Memorial, Guru Govind Singh, Aruna Asaf Ali and NC Joshi hospitals
WHAT TO DO IN an EMERGENCY
Accidents and Injuries (Trauma)
* In case of major injury or accidents, either call Centralised Accidents & Trauma Services (CATS) or Police Control Room or the ambulance or take the person to the nearest hospital or to Sushruta Trauma Centre behind IP College
* Major Hospitals where CT scan with ICU facilities are available are: Lok Nayak (Delhi Gate), GB Pant (Jawahar Lal Nehru Marg), Ram Manohar Lohia, Safdarjung, AIIMS, Hindu Rao, Deen Dayal, Sushruta Trauma Centre, Guru Teg Bahadur and Guru Nanak Eye Centre—for eye-related trauma
Burns
* In case of burns, patients are taken to LNJP, Ram Manohar Lohia, Safdarjung, AIIMS, Hindu Rao, ESI, Deen Dayal and Guru Teg Bahadur hospitals
Heart Attack
* Intensive Cardiac Care (ICCU) facilities are available at Lok Nayak, GB Pant, Guru Teg Bahadur, Ram Manohar Lohia, Sucheta Kriplani, Safdarjung, AIIMS, Hindu Rao, ESI and Deen Dayal hospitals
Drowning
* In case of drowning, call the fire service (101) or PCR (100) or CATS (1099)
Dog Bite & Snakebite
Rabies vaccination and treatment for snakebite are available for free at all government-run hospitals
Outbreak of Diseases
* The control room of Directorate of Health services should be contacted in case of a suspected outbreak of a disease on 3722187 and 7179281
Tuberculosis
* Treatment for tuberculosis is free at DOTS centres operating from different government dispensaries
Regional Blood Transfusion Centres
* There are five regional blood transfusion centres: RBTC, Lok Nayak, GTB, DDU, Hindu Rao and AIIMS
