Chidambaram

New Delhi In a decision that will have a total financial implication to the tune of Rs 6,020 crore over a 14 month period starting January 1, 2009, the Union Cabinet on Thursday approved a six percent hike in the Dearness Allowance (DA) given to Central Government employees and pensioners.

The decision will benefit 41 lakh government employees and another 38 lakh pensioners. Although revision of DA is done every six months, the quantum of the hike is being viewed as another poll sop doled out by the government with an eye on the forthcoming general elections.

Following Thursday’s decision. the DA component in the salaries and pensions will increase from the 16 to 22 per cent. While the financial implication of the move on the salary component will be Rs 4,100 crore, the implication on the pension component will be around Rs 1,920 crore.

Union Home Minister P Chidambaram said that the hike will be effective from January 1 and will be payable from March 1 this year.

DA by ANIL BATT on 16 Apr 2009

Is release of DA will now be stopped from July,09 i.e. after receiving recently released 6% hike i.e. after 22% DA no further DA will be released for one year. Is it true or humor?

DA by Harry Rakhraj on 30 Jun 2009

DA is linked to the WPI and is not something granted or denied by the Govt arbitrarily. As and when the WPI crosses a certain point, DA will be sanctioned.

envying hike in DA by G Singh on 06 Mar 2009

hike is justified by pritish on 27 Feb 2009

i think the hike is justified, first of it is always a wrong concept that all public sector employees are inefficient. those who think so should look how railways have made a turnaround it is not the minister doing the work rather the employees of it,then take isro, and many others. next thing is that when the market was booming the private sector was paying much higher than govt sectors so why then no body was saying that it is not justified ? it is also not that all the employees in private sector are giving 100% if this had been the case there would not have been any private companies going in loss. look at satyam where they govt employees still they cheated crores of public money. those who start at same time one at public and another at private the later would recieve more increements than the earlier because they can give according to individuals performance but the earlier even sometimes misses usual timely promotion due to some or the other reasons so the is always justified.

DA hike by Vivek Gupta on 27 Feb 2009

Hey!What is wrong if somebody gets its due? Do the government employees not have families? Are their children not serving the country in private sector or doing petty business? Do you feel all government employees are corrupt?Don't you feel the scientists who sent Chandrayan are also government employees? This is ridiculous.Come out of this mentality.

its time to pull up the shocks by PULAK BHATTACHARJEE on 26 Feb 2009

Central Government employees are getiing enough emoulments in comparison to others but they hardly put up their 100% effort in the interest of the nation, so now its the high time that they do justice to their duty , be more accountable. Myself being a central govt.employee have come across so many employees who are indeed a liability to the nation. So the pay hike should be strictly based upon the performance and that would only propell our nation ahead.

DA hike by Parameswaran M.K. on 26 Feb 2009

The Govt servants should get their dues. It is the duty of the Govt to get the services done by it's eployees. The main problem is that we did not impart a work culture to our Govt employees. Even our union leaders did not bother to teach the employees to have a work culture.

Price of essential goods by aam aadmi on 26 Feb 2009

They are actually public servants who are supposed to look after the welfare of the people including controlling prices of essential goods. By giving them DA hike very now and then, the government is rewarding them for ignoring the interest of common people

Election Offer to repeat Delhi by Ramesh on 02 Mar 2009

Congress is Masters in doing such election gimics. Even Petrol and Diesel prices which were supposed to reduce last year, but they decreased only recently to get votes. Pure Non-Sense

6% sops by Siva Kumar on 26 Feb 2009

The increase in DA is not justified at this juncture. The burden comes on the next Govt. and the solace PC can take is that it is going to be somebody else.Extend all sops ASAP before the EC notifies the election date.

DA by surya on 26 Feb 2009

Who is our Finance Minister now ?

Paycuts for the rest of us by Dinesh on 26 Feb 2009

Sir, Remember the FM advocating paycuts to save jobs. Probably this does advice does not apply to our rulers. The Govt servants get 3 hikes every year - One increment 2 DA hikes and a bonanza every 5-6 years. Many of them putin 15 minutes a day of real work!! See the state of the Govt hospitals, schools, courts, roads, police stations. Are the borders guarded?? It is high time that the citizenry stops paying taxes and starts a satyagraha against these self serving scoundrals.

DA hike for Government servants by Dr B Sundara on 26 Feb 2009

Government servants too pay tax. Many of the essential work that is required to run the country are done by the government servants. How efficiently or inefficiently they do the work is another matter. You have railways moving the nation, and defence personnel gaurding the country and so and so forth. So let us desist from fuming at governent employees getting their salaries and DA hikes etc.If efficiency of government servants is poor, it is largely due to bad human resource management. There are wrong persons occupying right positions. Developing a good work culture, improving working environment, providing good guidance, etc are required to be improved in most government departments. Even in the present time, you may find no proper facilities like computers, internet, furniture, buildings, etc in many offices.

Unproductive expenditure by Sanjoy Gupta on 26 Feb 2009

There goes more of tax payers money down the drain.

It is not fair by R.Ramachandran on 26 Feb 2009

The Dearness Allowance is paid to the Government servants to off set the increase in the cost of living. Therefore it is not fair to say that the increase in DA according to the set formula consequent to the increase in cost of living is either wastage of tax payers money or the money goes down the drain.
