The 17-nation poll conducted for the BBC World Service, a media release said, finds widespread and growing optimism that Obama's presidency will lead to improved relations between the US and the rest of the world.
The poll also shows people around the world are looking to Obama to put highest priority on dealing with the current global financial crisis.
Although Indians agree with most people in other parts of the world that the US should make dealing with the global financial crisis a top priority, the number holding this view is less than one-half and lower than all other countries polled.
According to the poll, Indians believe the US should put emphasis on dealing with the global financial crisis (47 per cent top priority, 21 per cent important) and improving America's relationship with their country (42 per cent top priority, 22 per cent important).
As many as 35 per cent of Indians say addressing climate change should receive top priority from the US, while 33 per cent believe it should be important, the release said.
On other issues where the US could take action, Indians say attention should go to brokering peace between Israel and the Palestinians (28 per cent top priority, 27 per cent important), withdrawing US troops from Iraq (27 per cent top priority, 28 per cent important), and supporting the government of Afghanistan against the Taliban (26 per cent top priority, 32 per cent important).

I see many Indians have written that America has not helped India. On the contrary the entire IT industry in India depends mostly on USA to provide outsourcing. Many in India and many Indians abroad have developed tremendous relationships which should not be forgotten. In the defense matters and any dispute with Pakistan, India needs to also look at what they do - they are pro-Russia, anti-America and buy every where except from the US. At least this perception is there. USA will do its part, but India needs to do its part. Friendship, trade and strategic interests are always two way streets. DO not criticize countries since each country including India has self interest. Life goes on and India should be able to do well in the future.
Forty Fourth American President was required to place primary emphasis on financial crisis. Mr. Obama Barak will do the same. The thing that makes President (elect) Obama important is that he is the first African American and most of the world's population admires him. Countries that are democratic tends to have better relationships with USA. I am sincerely hoping for Mr. Obama to make America a kinder and a gentler nation and fight for American people.
Indians have all along supported USSR, Arabs and always taken anti American stand .Even siging nueclear deal has to go through so much of labour pain .Still expect America to be Pro India , support, sympathy etc etc.Do U all have any self respect left ?
every mlechha world would like India to fail spiritually. They bring so called development to India on those flashy outlook. ON the hindsight we have nothing to recover...
No US Presidents in the past - including Kennedy - have helped India. Except fortheir lip-sympathy, everyone of them was Pro-Pakistan
This is my personnal views i dont think Mr.Obama will change the world, He do as same his successor Mr. Bush. he cannot do anything that will harm the American Policy.
America will not change towards-Kashmir, Terrorism,Pakistan therefore NO change for India
