69,000 men in uniform to guard booths

Kolkata, May 13 A total of 69,000 police and para-military force personnel will guard the polling booths in the second phase of panchayat elections in five districts of West Bengal on Wednesday.

The 30,000 personnel of the state’s armed police force would be complemented by 25,000 personnel from the BSF, 7,000 from the Tripura Police, 5,000 from Kerala Police and 2,000 from the Orissa Police, IGP (Law and Order) Raj Kanojia said.

They would be deployed in North and South 24 Parganas, Howrah and Nadia districts, besides Hooghly, the site of the Tata Motors small car project, over which there was turmoil in the past. There would be mobile patrolling in the districts and ADG of Police P K Sahay has been entrusted with the overall responsibility of security during the second phase of the panchayat polls, he said.

Home Secretary Asok Mohan Chakraborti said he had received several complaints from some political parties on the eve of the polling.

To a question, he said the polling process might be prolonged in some remote areas.
