According to Dr C V V Bhadram, deputy director of the Indian Metereological Department (Western Region), the cold spell is likely to continue for next three to four days. “The temperature is likely to fall slightly lower tonight,” Bhadram said on Friday evening. “This temperature is the second lowest in the history of this city during the winter season,” Bhadram said.
While this will this season’s lowest temperatures, it is also the lowest ever temperature recorded in the month of February in Mumbai. The earlier lowest for February was Wednesday’s 9.4 degrees Celsius and, before that, 10 degrees Celsius on February 10, 1950.
The new low seems to be contradicting the normal trend of temperatures beginning to rise over this month.
The weather bureau has also issued a cold wave warning in parts of north Konkan and north central Maharashtra for the next 48 hours. According to Bhadram, the cold wave is a result of intense and severe snowfall in north India and the dry northerly winds causing the chill here.
