New Delhi, March 19: India's Twenty20 World Cup triumph may have established the team as one of the most formidable sides in world cricket, but the nation's historic 1983 World Cup victory is more significant, concluded a debate.

The discussion, which hardly deliberated on the designated topic -- Is 1983 World Cup victory bigger than T20 win in 2007? -- largely centred around the impact of the newest and shortest format of the game.

The commercialisation of cricket, the mind-boggling amounts involved and the avenues the new format has opened for players in cricket-crazy India, were some of the points which came up in the debate.

Former cricketers Chetan Chauhan and Nikhil Chopra and journalists Pradeep Magazine and Partha Bhaduri participated in the show.

Magazine argued the 1983 victory was achieved in anestablished format and T20 was a fledgling concept whose significance cannot be ascertained at this stage.

Chopra, on the other hand, said the impact of the T20 win was bigger as it had played a pivotal role in opening a new window for those cricketers who might not get a chance to represent the country but would can still make a career.

Chauhan said the win in 50-over format was more significant as it popularised cricket in the sub-continent. He also argued that cricketing skills of a player can be better judged in longer formats.

The audience largely felt that television coverage and media hype had also played a key role in popularising the T20 format.
