Ludhiana, January 8 An 85-year-old patient was successfully operated upon for knee replacement, in a rare case of total knee joint replacement due to osteoarthritis.

Dr Balwant Singh Hunjan of Hunjan Bone and Joint Hospital performed the operation. He said that it was a rare case, as the operation was performed on a patient over 80. “Contrary to the belief that knee joint replacement in such old patients is not successful, this proves that the replacement can be performed irrespective of the age of the patient, given the patient is otherwise healthy,” he said.

Dev Prakash, who today walked home with no pain in the knee, said he was happy and satisfied with the replacement. While explaining the complications in the case, Dr Hunjan said, “The right knee was in such a bad condition that the patient could not walk properly. It qualifies to be called a rare case since not many people at this age go for replacement while the fact of the matter is that it is possible to perform such replacement on them.”

Dev Prakash had been suffering from osteoarthritis for long, and had trouble walking properly. After the medical examination, it was found that his right knee had been badly damaged and the bending was difficult. Dr Hunjan said that after the replacement, the patient could easily bend the knee at 90 degrees, which was not possible earlier.
