According to the police, 28 young labourers from Murena, who were hired by a gas agency in Shirur taluka, boarded the truck at Ahmednagar at around 1 pm. Just before the truck was to halt at Shirur, the driver lost control over the vehicle and it turned turtle near a bridge at Shirur.
The truck was carrying iron rods as its primary load and the labourers were crushed between the rods. The impact was so severe that nine labourers died on the spot. The deceased were identified as Maunu Jagdish Sharma (15), Maunu Somudayal Darji (17), Visambar Sharma (35), Nawab Laxminarayan Kusuva (31), Anup Soniram Kusuva (18), Mohan Razak (25), Mahavir Sharma (28), Chandagiram Darji (25) and Kalyan (full name not known). Police said that accident was brutal as they took help from the local people for removing the iron rods as many victims had their bodies impaled on the rods.
The 12 labourers who received major injuries were admitted to a private hospital.
