‘9 people still missing in Nandigram since Nov 10 BUPC rally’

Kolkata, April 9 In an affidavit submitted to the High Court, the state government has admitted that nine persons, who had taken part in a rally of Bhumi Ucched Pratirodh Committee (BUPC) on November 10, 2007 in Nandigram, are still missing. The rally was allegedly attacked by CPM activists and its hired goons.

Nine persons were killed in the violence that took place between November 6 to 11 in Nandigram when locals protested against the land acquisition.

The government has, however, denied the allegation that police were withdrawn from Tekhali bridge and other areas and said that security forces continued patrolling in the villages.

The state government stated that around 2,000 homeless people took shelter in the five camps after being driven out from Nandigram in January 2007.

Whenever they tried to return to their homes, they met with stiff resistance. This social and political tension manifested itself in the form of sporadic violence, it stated.

Clashes between CPM and BUPC broke out on November 6 in the bordering areas of Nadigram and Khejuri with Satengabari, Takapura, Akandabari, Jambari, being the worst-hit areas.

The affidavit stated that between November 6 and 11, a total of 222 cases were registered in Nandigram police station. Out of this 70 cases have ended in chargesheets.

It further stated that the district police handed over all the murder, kidnapping and rape cases to the CID and the agency is investigating 22 cases since November. The police have also arrested 107 persons up to February 29 who were involved in crimes during that period.

Giving details of the rally organised by the BUPC on November 10, the affidavit said that the rally was attacked by a group at Maheshpur and Amgachia in Nandigram, after which 42 persons went missing. Some of them were abducted and confined in a place at Khejuri. Later, 33 persons could be traced.

The government said in its affidavit that the CID also continued with its investigation into the rape case of Akaraza Bibi of Satangabari and Niyati Patra of Gokulnagar.
