New Delhi, January 28: The Supreme Court stayed the execution of death sentence awarded to Yakub Abdul Razak Memon in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case.

The court admitted the statutory appeal of Yakub Memon, who is suffering from schizophrenia, and issued notice to the CBI.

The apex court also granted bail to Essa Memon who has been convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment in the blasts case in which one of the main accused and his brother Tiger Memon is absconding.

Essa alias Anjum Abdul Razak Memon was granted interim bail on September 7 last along with three other members of the family as they had not received the copy of the judgement relating to conviction passed in November 2006.

A Bench headed by Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan imposed the same conditions on Essa which it had imposed on actor Sanjay Dutt, who was provided relief in November last.

Appearing for Memon, senior advocate Harish Salve, contended before the Bench that the convict had already spent more than 12 years in the jail and should be granted bail.

Memon was convicted by the designated court under Section 3(3) of the TADA and 120B (Criminal Conspiracy) of the IPC.

Six other convicts Rubina Suleman Memon, Yusuf Abdul Razaq Memon, Sardar Shahwali Khan, Muzamil Umar Kadri, Khalil Ahmed Sayed Ali Nazir and Zamir Sayed Ismail Kadri have also applied for bail and the Bench fixed February 5 to hear their pleas.

While Rubina, Yosuf, Shahwali Khan, Umar Kadri and Ismail Kadri have been awarded life sentence, Ali Nazir has been given 10 years jail term.
