The ultra-modern Chandimandir Command Hospital offers latest health care to defence personnel and their families. Varun Chadha does a recce of this state-of-the-art institute

As part of its effort to upgrade facilities at the Chandimandir Command Hospital, state-of-the-art facilities have been introduced by the Western Command to provide best health care facilities to the troops operating in the Western as well as the Northern Command.

From Cardiac Care Unit (CCU), Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) to physiotherapy department, all have been equipped with modern machines.

Having facility for treating premature and low-birth weight infants and other sick newborn babies, the unit has been successfully managed to prevent developmental problems in neonates, which has helped further reduce the neonatal mortality rate. The NICU has an expert neonatalogist, pediatricians, nursing, and para-medical staff.

Although the mortality rate at the Command Hospital is 6 per 1,000 live births as compared to the national figure of 40 per 1,000 live births, the unit aims at combining a family-centered supportive approach with thrust on neonatal medicine.

Equipped with all the modern electro-medical equipment and facilities for the critically-ill cardiac patients, the Cardiac Care Unit (CCU) has been located adjacent to the ICU of the hospital for better logistical support.

Officials said it has fulfilled a long felt need of the hospital and promises to provide a major reprieve to cardiac patients. The CCU helps in providing specialised care to the cardiac patients and also assists in closer monitoring of patients.

The recently renovated physiotherapy department of the hospital is equipped with the modern equipments for soldiers and their families. Besides having two therapy rooms, a gymnasium and a multigym, the centre also has the equipment for short-wave, microwave, interferential therapy, medical electricity and continuous passive movement (CPM).

The department is also equipped with a nautical wheel, a static cycle, an inversion table, a treadmill, parallel bars, a quadriceps bench, a balancing board, a contrast bath and a wax bath for the benefit of ill patients.

The commandant of the hospital said on an average, about 125-130 patients attend the physiotherapy department at the hospital daily. The new department has been designed to provide these patients benefit of latest technology in a comfortable environment, he stated

The Command Hospital at Chandimandir is a large 658-bed superspecialty centre. Advances in technology and changes in clinical practices require regular modernization of equipment and the hospital consistently endeavours to acquire the latest equipment for the benefit of patients.
