Kundu used to work as a driver of Jayanta Chowdhury, additional officer-in-charge of Tollygunge police station. He stole the pistol from Sunil Kumar Majhi, a special guard (constable) of the OC.

The incident has shaken the top brass of Kolkata police. Commissioner Gautam Mohan Chakraborti visited the Tollygunge police station and held a high-level meeting. The special guard has been suspended and an inquiry has been ordered.

“It is shocking that our service revolver has been used to murder someone. The guard should have informed his senior officers about the loss. Further steps will be taken,” said Chakraborti.

“The man in question said that he kept the revolver in his box in the morning after duty, but forgot to lock it. We have learnt that two bullets were shot at the girl and the youth fired twice on himself,” added Chakraborti.

The police came to know about the gun after the incident was reported. Top officers went to the police station and called Majhi. Majhi had apparently said that early this morning he had kept his loaded pistol in his locker at the police station, but forgot to lock it. Later, when he realised that the weapon was missing, instead of informing his superior officers he just lodged a complaint.
