What’s it about? From feasting on dhokla and khandvi on the Gujarat stretch to taking swigs of wine in Goa and bingeing on yummy brownies and desserts in Nashik, the second season of Highway On My Plate, a food and travel show on NDTV Good Times gets us the best of India’s dhaba cuisine.
Highway cuisines are quite a popular trend in India. From Punjabi dhabas to Udipi cafés, India’s national highways dish out some of the scrumptious flavours of the country. Moreover, they are appetising, tasty and the best part is they are very reasonably priced.
Who’s in it?Two nomads cum anchors, Rocky and Mayur, host this unique culinary show on India’s national highways, stretching from Jammu to Tamil Nadu. They eat at various dhabas on the highway, talk to the locals, ride on trucks and auto rickshaws, pretend to be vegetable vendors and get the best on the food culture of a particular area.
They strictly follow the adage ‘Live to eat’ and enjoy every moment hitchhiking through the best culinary joints.
What’s hot?A layman’s show, it gives you a bird’s eye view of life in the fast lane. The two anchors really enjoy the show and the enthusiasm spreads to the viewer as well. But what one must really envy is their voracious appetite and strong stomachs which seem to take in everything that they eat along the way.
The show gives you everything on the platter—the exact location of the dhabas along with the name of the highway and the village where it is situated, the exact name of the dishes and also the history of the food culture of a region.
Dishing out interesting recipes from various parts of India is also on their menu. The outdoor locales are captured well and the show is packaged well visually.
What’s not?Travel shows have a tendency of getting a little mundane. We only hope this one doesn’t. The show lacks a script for sure and the background score could put you to sleep. The anchors seem to have taken their democratic right to speech, quite literally. They mouth dialogues that are at most times frivolous and unnecessary.
Should you be watching it?This show is for the Indian traveller. All you backpackers could learn a thing or two from this show. The next time you hit the highway make sure you head to one of the dhabas. For the rest who love to cool their heels at home, you could have the highway on your plate, indeed.
