Srinagar The Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA), which has been in force for nearly two decades in militancy-hit Jammu and Kashmir, will come to an end during the tenure of his government, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said.

After the Army submitted its report on the killing of two youths in Bomai-Sopore last month, Omar said, "I am the first Chief Minister who has assured on the floor of state assembly that AFSPA will be withdrawn.”

"Things are changing fast towards normalisation and I can assure that this Act will come to an end during the tenure of National Conference-Congress government," Omar said.

The Army earlier submitted its report into the February 21 killing of two youth at Bomai village near Sopore town in North Kashmir.

A junior commissioned officer and two soldiers were indicted for ‘various lapses’ in connection with a firing incident and the Army ordered ‘disciplinary action against the three which will commence with immediate effect’.

Omar said his government did not believe in only ordering a magisterial probe and then forget about them.

"I only ensured that the Army probe and investigations by the police were completed in a time-bound manner. This has happened," he said.

AFSPA to end...Omar by Maj Gen DK Sen,AVSM(Retd) on 21 Mar 2009

Army probes always proceed as per the law in a time-bound manner. Transparency is always the hallmark of any Army enquiry. The same cannot be said of civilian enquiries. Omar Abdullah may regret his decision to remove the AFSPA. Our states in the North-East have already come to that realisation. And, if one may ask, how does he propose to bring to heel the terrorists who throw grenades and kill civilians in Lal Chowk, or fire at our troops from behind curtained windows on the streets of Sopore? As a concerned citizen, I would like to ask, what are his "Standard Operating Procedures" for such acts which occur almost every day in the Valley?

Why you have 800,000 army men in small valley to slave us by Imran on 21 Mar 2009

Why you have 800,000 army men in small valley to slave us.In Azad Kashmir there are not even 10,000 pakistani troops. You know if we are given right of self determination we will not vote to join India. So you are trying to stop our voices by force but you will be defeated. We have over 80,000 martyrs. No indian media shows that thing. You all are biased.

Pakistan must vacate from POK by Raja Hindustani on 21 Mar 2009

Aslam Paki, Don't need a traitor like u to keep Kashmir. There are 2 reasons why there are 10000 soldiers in Paki Trecherous Heathen occupied Kashmir1. Because the Paki Army ran away from POK just like they did from Swat Valley and 2. Because India does not commit acts of terrorism in POK. Infact India has not even destroyed theterrorist training camps in POK . As regards the 800 000 soldiers , there are less than 300 000 soldiers actually. There is insurgency in the North East and Troops are sent to Congo and Afghanistan so you dim wit, your 800 000 does not add up. As regards the self determination, Whole of Kashmir belongs to India and Indians and so Indians will excercise the right of self determination to decide whether the Paki Trecherous Heathen should continue to live in Kashmir or not. Now , get that straight ! ! !

Why not end militancy in your tenure by Price on 21 Mar 2009

Why doesn't he claims to end militancy in Kashmere. If there is no militancy and no terrorists then there will be no army. Is there an army in Delhi, HP, Karnataka. The core of the issue is why Army is there in Kashemere. Remove the cause or India and Kashmere both are endangered. Why a childish and self serving attitude of this young so called leader.

HA ..HA..HAAAA JOKING WITH PAKISTAN by Girish Bhardwaj on 20 Mar 2009

Yes can be removed but only after destroying Pakistan. ONLY AFTER DESTROYING PAKISTAN . What UPA or any other Govt. has done for Kashmiri Pandits ? No BASTARD MUSLIM CAN SOLVE THIS AS MUSLIMS ARE THE ONLY TO CREATE IT OKAY. DON'T EVER THINK TO REMOVE UNTIL YOU CAN'T REHABILITATE KASHMIRI PANDITS. WHAT COMPENSATION HAS BEEN GIVEN TO THEM ? YES IN COMPENSATION THEY HAVE BEEN INSULTED AND EXPELLED OUT OF THEIR OWN STATE

Omar's illusions by Hero Vaz on 20 Mar 2009

If Kashmir is returning to normal, it will not be because of Omar or his Govt. And if the Armed Forces Act is withdrawn, it will be because, in the reckoning of the Central Govt., it is no longer required. No credit to Omar
