Kolkata, April 28 Air India Express (AIE), subsidiary of National Aviation Company of India Ltd. (NACIL), is planning to launch flights between Kolkata and Dhaka.

Commencing operations with three leased aircraft, Air India Express (AIE) today has 18 aircrafts — the most technologically advanced single-aisle jet aircrafts — and by the end of 2009, it proposes to have a fleet of 25 aircrafts.

Jet to withdraw Kolkata-Ahmedabad flight
Four months after Jet Airways had launched its daily Kolkata - Ahmedabad flight in December 2007, the airline is all set to withdraw the flight from the city.

The reason has been attributed to the paltry number of passengers from Kolkata. “The eastern sector is not a very lucrative sector for us, the number of passengers was less and the timings of the flight were also inconvenient,” said a jet official. The decision has come at a time when the airline company has gone on a major expansion spree with the introduction of various domestic and international flights. “If Mumbai accounts for 55 per cent of passengers and the northern sector accounts for 30-35 per cent of passengers, the eastern sector only contributes 10 per cent to the total number of passengers per year,” said the official. The dates for withdrawing the flights are not confirmed yet.
