New Delhi, February 29: The ‘aam admi’ (common man) on Friday gave his thumbs-up to the Union Budget 2008-09, in which, apparently with an eye on elections, a large number of sops have been announced for the middle class and the farmers.

“It’s a good Budget. Though personally I will not gain much, hopefully we will not get to hear of any more suicides amongst farmers,” said Aditya Bandhopadhyay, a financial analyst with a public sector undertaking.

An employee with an international firm in Delhi, Amit Basu, has reasons to smile after having witnessed the Budget presentation by Finance Minister P Chidambaram.

“This Budget is pro-poor and pro-middle class. I am happy as I know that this time I will be able to buy a car,” he said, referring to the tax cuts on cars.

Basu also welcomed the increase in the income tax exemption limits.

Housewife Arti Singh said she was happy for her daughter as she would not have to pay income tax now after the increase in the exemption limit for women from Rs 1.4 lakh to Rs 1.8 lakh per year.

“She puts up all alone, toils it out in a completely unknown city and then has to pay a huge chunk of her income as tax. At least she is saved from paying her hard earned money as tax now,” she said.

The Union Budget 2008, - A marvelous demonstration of a ‘profoundly and finely tuned balancing act’ that has been successfully performed by Mr. Chidambaram! (PART-4) by Shahabuddin Nadeem on 02 Mar 2008

If as a secondary and concomitant and inevitable outcome of the various egalitarian measures taken by the FM helps in improving the prospects of Congress and its other partners in the UPA; provided all the proposals made for the amelioration of the farmers community and other down trodden sections of our society are earnestly and sincerely implemented on the ground by the UPA; the opposition should have gracefully accepted and appreciated these budget proposals instead of ‘ looking in to the gift horse’. They are also criticizing it in a no holds barred manner in the normal but unhealthy tradition of the opposition to oppose every - ‘good bad or ugly’ policy measure of the government’, an act, which in this instance at least, has exposed their own political opportunism and double standards as well as their ‘confused and jumbled up political posturings! They have betrayed only themselves through their immediate, senseless and insensitive criticism in a knee jerk fashion that may cost them politically to an extent, both in the near and long term and as much as the budget is likely to help the Congress.

These ‘opposing for the sake of opposing’ politicians of many hues have, with this reaction proved that they were only shedding ‘crocodile tears’ for the farmers and the farmers suicide issue for them was only a ‘political whip’ to flog the UPA government with!Going by the extension of ‘opposition’s logic’ behind their open criticism of the FM, it looks as though they are in fact thoroughly disappointed by the political masterstroke Mr.Chidambaram has accomplished on behalf of the UPA that incidentally has come ‘just in time’ before the next general election. This budget has certainly brought smiles on the faces of most of the small and marginal farmers who were truly under a state of unprecedented economic distress from the last several years and they are all only getting the much needed succor now through the ‘loan waiver scheme’ announced by the FM. The relief being offered now was in fact overdue from the UPA government from almost since an year and more, was the need of the hour and has certainly not come a day sooner.

However, it is certainly a strange phenomenon that those parties; some even with in the UPA and all of those in the opposition; who were only the other day ‘shedding tears profusely’ on the fate of the farmers and the poor amongst the urban populace; are now loudly criticizing the finance minister of political opportunism by branding the whole budget as an exercise done with an eye only on the next general election! The Union Budget 2008, - A marvelous demonstration of a ‘profoundly and finely tuned balancing act’ that has been successfully performed by Mr. Chidambaram and which had also demanded demonstration of an exemplary skill of a ‘tight rope walker’ from him all along. Mr. Chidambaram has done a ‘profoundly delicate balancing act’ while presenting the Union Budget – 2008 that meets the requirements of equity for the sake of an inclusive economic growth without loosing the much needed focus to keep and sustain the economy on its current higher growth trajectory. For succeeding in this marvelous and finely tuned exercise of ‘financial boldness mixed with a matching and visible, circumspection and caution ’ Mr. Chidambaram deserves to be not just appreciated, he needs to be applauded by all unequivocally without mincing of words.

Budget 2008 analysis by 'aadm admi' by aam admi on 01 Mar 2008

The first reaction of 'aam admi'is it is a 'positive budget'. Allocation of Rs.60,000 crores on farmers issue and waiving off loan. I don't fully agree with it due to various reasons like it will not definitely reach the small farmers. There is a possibility of favouritism and corruption and communalism while waiving of farmers debt and the honest farmers feel cheated. What I want instead is to make soft loan like giving agricultural loan @ 7%-8% interest rate on a long tenure which is a practical solution. Mr. Sharad Pawar holding agricultural portfolio, hence I suspect a better result considering Maharashtra experience like Vidharba, small Cotton and Sugar cane farmers and of course bulky bureaucracy in Agricultural Ministry and bank's reluctance to implement the policies. People of India find the figure Rs.60,000 crore such a large amount. If you look at the corruption in oil sector it will be just a 1/10th a year. We need a uniform taxes across India and lower custom and excise duty on petroleum product. No party want to take a courageous and bold decision because every party in India is part and parcel of this large corruption network. MPs and MLAs in India are unanimous in hiking their salary as well as not taking up the large scale corruption issue in petroleum sector, which many of the people don't know. It is a question mark, whether this budget convert into vote considering various other pressing issues and anti-incumbancy facing by the party at the Centre on SEZs, nuclear issue, communal issues in Maharashtra, failure to control inflation and other such issues. I still suspect the Congress game plan going to succeed in the electoral arena.

Comparition is always good. But while comparing one should not label the other just as NAUTKANEE brandishes BJP as commnunal while commenting on economic featutes. If that is so Congress is also communal as it has promised too much for the minority community.

Well done Chidabaram, you are a aam aadmi man. by "Nautankee" on 29 Feb 2008

Chidabaram is the man of the aam aadmi, he is as genious as Dr.Manmohan Singh.Unlike BJP whose so called leaders stole from every place, the Congress has clearly shown that it means business. This is a very big slap on the communal BJP force which was filling its on pockets with petrol pump scams to Katara human trafficking rackets.

Nautankee or election gimmic? by Rao on 01 Mar 2008

Good budget, by SKM on 29 Feb 2008

dont go by kerti...he must be from oposition party...lets be frank...I havent seen this kinda budget till now...chidambaram has moved his image from riches finance minister to garib ka finance minister...Some years back what BJP did is nothing...it was the fruits of plant sowed by PV and Manu...and now again Manu showing his intelligence again...we had for the first time such an educated PM...lets support..dont go by emotions..lets talk reality...it is essential to bring up the poor and middle class or else we are on brink of greating gap between poor and rich..which would over a period of time disturb our country's financial health

Media elites, spokesmen of aam adami? by kerty on 29 Feb 2008

Is it 'aam adami' or is it Government's chamchas giving thumbs up here? Aam Aadmi would not even know what it means to them until it hits their pocket books. What you have here is political hacks and media elites posing as aam adami.
