Adelaide, February 17: Indian bowlers pinned down Australia but their famed batting colleagues made a mess of a modest chase as the visitors hurtled to a 50-run defeat in the cricket tri-series one dayer.

After their seamers had restricted Australia to 203 for nine wickets in 50 overs, India's much-vaunted batting order proved a huge let down as they collapsed in just 41.2 overs for a meagre 153 against an Australian attack sans their spearhead Brett Lee.

Australia also managed to bag an additional bonus point from the win and are virtually assured of a place in the final.

The hosts lead the table with 17 points in the kitty from five matches. India remain second with eight points from as many games, while Sri Lanka have six from four outing.

India, chasing 204 for win, were always against it when they lost three wickets in a clutch to be 59 for four in the 16th over.

Irfan Pathan (14), Gautam Gambhir (34) and Rohit Sharma (1) departed within eight balls to leave India staring at defeat at a critical time.

Sachin Tendulkar went early for five off a dubious leg before decision but Gambhir and Pathan took the score to 55 without much trouble when the rot set in.

India were revived by the 56-run fourth wicket stand between skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni (37) and vice captain Yuvraj Singh (26) and appeared to be back once again in the hunt.

silence is gold by Vishal on 19 Feb 2008

I again, with folded hands, request my fellow indians ro refrain from posting stupid comments. Dear countrymen. Don't you know when you have been licked ? The Australian posting here are 100 % right. Our legendry batting line up and legendry cricketing status is just a lot of hot air. They are correct in saying that our players have no heart. I personally have very seldom seen the indian team fight and snath a victory from the jaws of defeat. I have seen them do the opposite plenty of times. Our team sucks. Our players play like sissies. Adnt therefore we are better off not responding to the Australians here becasue guys we just sound plain ridiculous. so shut the F up.

Sachin Tendulkar spirit of the game by Brian on 18 Feb 2008

The best part of the whole game was watching Sachin Tendulkar's spirit of the game, not walking when given out by the umpire, I wonder what he was thinking while staring at the umpire "I'm ringing the BCCI on you umpire to get you sacked, give me out LBW will you".

Indian players have no heart by Jon on 18 Feb 2008

More than 1 billion people, 70% of the world's cricket money, and this the best India can do! Your players have no heart. I always here talk about LION players. What a joke. Australia is a very small country without lots of money, but at least when our players represent their country, they always do their best. Instead of India accusing Australia of cheating and sledging, and blaming the rain, umpires and everything else you can think of; you should follow Australia's example and fight like Lions!

Change needed by Sumna on 18 Feb 2008

Jon, you are right that your country is small with less money still you win sometimes normally, sometimes taking umpire's help, sometimes by cheating. because you are aggresive to win at any cost. Which Indian players lacking because of their upbringing, culture, society and food habits (most are vegetarian and follower of Ahinsa-nonviolance). When Indian players will be like you in character, you cannot compete with your chicken ponting and symonds).

Chicken feed by Phil on 18 Feb 2008

If Ponting (number 1 batsman in world) and Symonds (number 1 all rounder in the world) are chickens, what does that make your players? Chicken feed!

Two sides to sportsmanship by SVS on 18 Feb 2008

Last match Gilchrist was out LBW when he clearly hit the ball first, and he walked straight away. Tendulkar was out this match LBW, plumb, and he didn't walk straight away. Good example of good sportsmanship from Gillie and bad sportsmanship from Sachin. India media didn't say anything about Gillie getting out, but above says Sachin decision was dubious...obviously India is only given one sided information. What a pathetic bunch of whingers and sore losers. It wasn't the rain this time, maybe it was the sunshine.

Australia out of form by Taj on 18 Feb 2008

No Brett Lee, Ponting, Hussey and Symonds all in bad form...and yet Australia still managed a bonus point. Good luck to India when Australia start playing well again! Not a single drop of rain to blame it on either.

Don't understand playing Yuvi by Prathap Chithapuram on 17 Feb 2008

I don't understand people saying that Uthappa should be dropped. When did he get a decent batting slot to play in this series. If Yuvi can get chances why not a person below the imaginary dividing line. I guess if they drop Sreesanth and Robin, it could become a team of people above the imaginary line. Why don't we get Rahul Gandhi and Lalu's kids to play on this team. Ifran and Yuvi get to play slots 3 and 4, while a pure batsman like Robin gets to play at slot 6 or 7. Is Ifran a better batsman than Robin. You got be kidding me. What has Sehwag done in this series?. Has Sachin played an inning when we needed one?. Great players win games by themselves. What has Dhoni done in this entire series including Tests?. We should be dropping all of them also. Team needs players like Laxman and/or Dravid. They don't score quickly but can definitely stem a collapse when needed. Please mark the words "when needed" (i.e. Please look back at the 2 to 3 years and you will Sachin and Ganguly have never stayed and scored when the team has needed most. Dravid and Laxmn have done that).

Dhoni never learn from mistakes by Suman on 17 Feb 2008

The most shameful aspect of Dhoni is that he never learn from his mistake and always defend his mistakes. Today also after the loss he has defended his decissions like playing with Yuvi, Pathan at No-3 etc. Such proud man cannot improve who does not accept his mistakes. This chutia Bihari is a misfortune to India.

there were 6 known batsmen, all flunked.

Indian Team by Abheet on 17 Feb 2008

So what is new?? What are players like Yuvi, Sreesanth and Uthappa doing there? The problem with Indian team is lack of team work and the players play individual game to safeguard their wealth handed out to them for offering nothing to the Indian public in return. Just over paid and over fed individuals.

Adeladie IDI test between India-Australia by Ananthasivan NN on 17 Feb 2008

There is no use persisting with Uthappa and Sreesanth. Uthappa utter failure in batting and Sreeesanth had been thrashed properly. Yuvraj is out of form and what is the necessity in persisting with him. Munaf Patel is another blower with no wicket and no score. Let us pray our selections committee and captain Dhoni should use their head for selecting team

Whole team India is permanently out of form by Ashok k Singh on 17 Feb 2008

This is unacceptable. Whole Indian team is out of form. Most disgusting part is not that they win or loose but they are repeatedly unable to survive 50 overs. Why did they kick out Ganguly, who was in form for out of form Yuvi?

Dhoni is not capable of captaining side. by Prakash Kapila on 17 Feb 2008

Why is non performing player a captain?Dhoni has not played like a batsman leave alone like a captain.Which captain in the world will leave out a performing player to someone who is not performing.Which captain in the world will take all the laurels to himself for win and blame everything else except himself for losses.Dhoni failed as a player and performed miserably as captain.BCCI is a committe of bunch of fools led by most foolish of persons Mr.Sharad Pawar who lives in era of 70's and 80's.They are not matching the agrresive moves that other cricket associations do.Steve waugh was removed from game for not performing as a player.Miandad was removed from captain when a more mature Imran Khan came in.Why was kumble not given captainship of ODI when he did extreemly great as captain. No side in cricket in recent past could give a tough fight to Australia in Australia except India under Kumble who motivated a demotivated side and always used his performing players to talk behalf of his side.Pawar

BCCI Selectors need to be judicious, impartial and fair by P.P. TALWAR on 17 Feb 2008

All said and done, Team India lacks cohesiveness, 'do or die' spirit and love for the country which was quite evident during ODI playd at Adelaide, Australia, where India lost the game to Australia by 50 Runs. On the contrary, Aussies whether bowlers or batsmen, all were showing extreme team spirit, enthusism, skill and mental robustness. Indian batsmen, one to all like to harp on their past laurels which lets them down. Will Team India selectors be judicious, impartial and fair while conducting the selection process of Team India.?

Match gifted to Australia by Sujit on 17 Feb 2008

Dhoni has gifted today's match to struggling Ponting. Otherwise there is no reason to play with five bowlers when bowlers were doing well in previous match and not all Indian barsmen are not in form. Dhoni might have learnt his lesson of over confidence of batting strength. The way Dhoni is captaining this series with sudden change of team line up and batting order without any valid justification, the need of an experienced captain is all the more evident.

Poor performance by dilip/hyderabad on 17 Feb 2008

It was a pathetic capitulation. They are paying the price of keeping performers like ganguly out.Who wants to watch matches in aus were there is such poor performance by india.Munaf patel must be dropped until he impoves his fielding.

What excuse this time? by SVS on 17 Feb 2008

Was it the rain? Was it too much sledging from australian players? Bad umpires? ICC out to get India? Really, I am looking forward to your excuse for the latest pathetic performance. Think of something original please.
