New Delhi, January 9: L K Advani, who was recently anointed BJP's Prime Ministerial candidate, has proposed that former Premier and party stalwart Atal Behari Vajpayee be awarded Bharat Ratna for his contribution to the national polity and for his statesmanship.

In a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh last Saturday, Advani said, "I would like to propose the name of Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee for recognition with Bharat Ratna this year. His contribution to our national life is so varied and well-known, and sustained over such a long period, that it bears no reiteration."

The National Awards including Bharat Ratna, the country's highest civilian honour, are announced on the eve of Republic Day falling on January 26.

The proposal by Advani, who listed ten points commending his close associate of several decades from the Jan Sangh days, appear to indicate changing power dynamics in BJP.

But BJP spokesman Prakash Javedakar when asked whether Advani's move signalled Vajpayee's retirement from active politics said the former Premier ‘is our guiding star and will be our guiding star’.

Vajpayee was prime minister from 1998 to 2004.

Advani regretted that in many instances government felt that there was none suitable to be conferred Bharat Ratna.

"Sadly, there have also been instances when the award was not given even when such suitable illustrious Indians existed in our midst or when their names were suggested for posthumous recognition," he said.

Indira Gandhi was the only Prime Minister to have a received a Bharat Ratna when alive. Rajiv Gandhi was conferred a similar honour posthumously.

Vajpayee Honour by Abheet on 11 Jan 2008

Vajpayee may deserve the highest award but the way it is proposed by Mr Advani is nothing more than opportunism. Advani has done absolutely nothing good for the nation. He is always thinking of making mischief. So far Mr Advani has destroyed Babri Masjid, boycotted parliament, supported Modi for the wrong reasons, this will certaily misfire on him, whereas Vajpayee disassociated himself from Modi and he has done every thing to slow down national progress. Now Advani is using Vajpayee as a pawn in his mischievious plans to embarrass the national Govt. I feel sad for Mr Vajpayee, a man of character, to be used like so. The purpose of Advani requesting such honour is not that he is fond of Vajpayee but to cause further political divisions so that he can tell Hindu voters that UPA does not honour a Hindu leader. Mr Advani has never done anything that does not cause national divisions or fray. He aught to be ashamed of himself for mudding Vajpayee name. Vajpayee himself should withdraw such request from Advani because Advani is the wrong person requesting this honour for the wrong reasons.

Yes Vajpayee deserve for this Bharath Ratna award really he did lot of good things to India but the same time he always makes a mistakes to support Narendra Modi, RSS, Bajrangdal, Shiv Sena. If Vajbayee deserve Bharath Ratna then why don't we consider Advani, Narendra Modi, Rajiv Bajaj of Sahara, Bhalthakaray, Togadia, Tulsi of Kabhi Sas bhi Bahoo thee. Because her personal nature is exactly opposite what she look in the said tele serial because she always support the rapist, killers of pregnant women, poor innocent kids and old age people.

Yes to Vajpayee by Abhisen Bose on 10 Jan 2008

Vajpayee really deserve Bharat Ratan. Under his leadership India became the nuclear power state. When he took over the government, our foreign reserve was close to nill. Under his leadership our foreign reserve went upto $100 billion. IT boom, industrial boom and infrastructural development boom started in his prime ministership. He is the leader of India. He is not a local leader like Jyoti Basu(West Bengal, whose contribution to our country is almost unknown.

Can you trust Advani? These politicians are scondrols, they give lip service, and innocent die for their cause. They honour him because he made sure there will be no mandhir in Adyodhya. These politician, are elitiest and they only seek their own conforts and false honors. Self gratifing bast*rds.

Bharat Ratna Award for Bajpayeeji by Prof. M.Nyamathullah on 10 Jan 2008

Shee Atal Bihari Vajpayee, broke off from All India Hindu Maha Sabha, under Sri S.P.Mukherji, because of his extremism and floated the Jan Sangh, which was renamed as BJP! He cautioned Indra Gandhi when she launched "Operation Blue Star", as playing the Hindu card too close to her! He demanded the ouster of Modi after the Gujarat Carnage! He was a seasoned politician, Hindi poet, and a great lover of humanity. The NDA govt. survived under him for six years because :"There was No Alternative"!(no replacement tp the PM)! He definitely desrves the "Bharat Ratna " award,

greatest film actress of india in past 60 years mrs SUCHITRA SEN should get BHARAT RATNA.it is difficult to determine greatest actor in past 60 years--there are 7 or 8 candidates but suchitra sen is way ahead of other actress like meena kumari or nargis or madhubala.FOR BHARAT RATNA THERE IS NO CONDITION THAT THE PERSON HAS TO ACCEPT THE AWARD IN PERSON-----HOW SO MANY PEOPLE HAVE BEEN GIVEN POSTHUMOUSLY?

Bharat Ratna by Partha Sircar on 10 Jan 2008

Vajpayeeji's long and illustrious political career cannot be denied. But what are his lasting contributions in the national level, beyond Parivar lines? His inaction and famous flip flop during the Gujarat riots did not do him any credit. And we should not bring up Rajiv Gandhi: it was a sentimental award.

A long ovrdue nomination ! by Sharad C. Misra on 10 Jan 2008

Advani's letter to Manmohan Singh is timely as otherwise under pressure of the Left the Government would have nominated Jyoti Basu or Karunanidhi. If Rajiv Gandhi and Bismillah Khan could be awarded Bharat Ratna what prevents Vajpayee from getting it whose contribution to Indian politics spanning more than half-a century has been tremendous, only next to Nehru ? It would be grave injustice not to consider him for the award. Chances are that under pressure of the Left the Government might not consider anyone worthy of the award this year to save it the embarrassment of rejecting Vajpayee. Or else, it might pick up someone from the entertainment industry like, Sachin Tendulkar, Amitabh Bachhan or Shah Rukh Khan. In any case, nomination of the awardee is a political decision having little to with the merit of the person.

reply by dil on 10 Jan 2008

its so foolish to compare Rajiv Gandhi with Bismillah Khan. Bismillah Khan a devout muslim played the Shehnai in the mornings in the Hindu temple of Sarasvati. He lived and died in the hindu city of Benares calling it the best place on earth. its a pity that some people underestimate the true worth of a man.

Vajpayee by Vijay on 09 Jan 2008

Vajpayee desrves it. However, the prestige of this award has declined as several unworthy people were bestowed with this honor in the past just because of their connections. With or without the award Vajpayee will be remembered by many Indians as a good person.

I second what Mr. Advani is saying, Mr. Vajpayee is the best prime minister ever. He has put India on world map, he gave us Delhi Metro, Highways, Nuclear power, IT superpower, multiple AIIMS, won Kargil, better Indo-US relations, POTA, honest, people's man. He deserves it.

Royal family and Bharat Ratna by Pooja on 09 Jan 2008

It is a wishful thinking. Every Indian knows that Bharat Ratna award was created by Nehru for the members of Royal family and it's strongest supporters.

Bharat Ratna by jagan on 09 Jan 2008

Bharat Ratna should never be given to Politicians:dead or alive. If Mahatma Gandhi did not get it then there is no one suitable for it, atleast in the political field. It can however be given to people with high achievements in Science, Economics, Arts etc.
