Another shoe, this time aimed at Advani

Bhopal BJP’s prime ministerial candidate L K Advani became the latest victim of a shoe attack on Thursday when a party member hurled his wooden footwear at him in Madhya Pradesh’s Katni town. Advani was about to settle in his chair on the dais when Pawas Agarwal, a former district vice-president and chief of the party’s local youth wing, who was seated in the front row, targeted him with his khadau, which he had borrowed from his father this morning.

Agarwal in his early 40s was busy in the arrangements for the public meeting till Wednesday, but lost his cool when he saw Advani getting on the stage, apparently because he was denied any responsibility of late.

“My son is under psychiatric treatment for the last three years. I asked him not to venture out this morning because he had not taken his tablet,” his father Surendra Agarwal told The Indian Express on phone.

Dr Sudhir Bhave, a psychiatrist who runs a clinic in Nagpur’s Ramdas Peth, confirmed that Agarwal was his patient, but refused to share details, saying it was confidential. “It’s possible that he could do such a thing,” he said without elaborating. The Indian Express has a copy of his prescriptions.

Embarrassed by the incident, the BJP claimed that Pawas Agarwal was no longer with the party and blamed his outburst on his mental condition. Agarwal was associated with the party for nearly two decades.

Advani, who was nearly 40 minutes behind schedule, completed his speech without referring to the incident and left before the meeting was over. Security at the meetings he was to address later was stepped up and the distance between the dais and public increased by several metres. However, the party tried to play down the incident.

The police booked him under Sections 151 (knowingly joining or continuing in assembly of five or more persons after it has been commanded to disperse) and 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty) of the IPC. The police said he misbehaved with them and did not cooperate when they tried to question him about the incident.

The BJP asked the media to avoid giving publicity to such acts. “What I can advise is that the media should avoid giving publicity to such maverick acts. These incidents would die down on their own,” BJP general secretary Arun Jaitley said.

Shoe - A voilent but correct way of protest against these corrupt politicians by Vaibhav Maddiwar on 17 Apr 2009

Throwing shoe is definitely a voilent way of protesting for rights but I would say even the biggest follower of Mahatma Gandhi would do the same act if he had experienced this thick skinned, corrupt politicians. Well done my boy and the day is not so far when this corrupt politicians will get a shower of shoe from atleast 100-1000 frustated people at the same time.

Mis(ile) guided by Ash on 17 Apr 2009

I think the shoe was hurled not at Advani but what the BJP stands for which is to set back the progress the country is making. Shoes can be hurled but the target should be the innumerable goons and thugs whos intentions are only to become rich, wield power for their benefits, and have no interest or idea how to do their jobs. People are frustrated by the ease at which these people are fooling the public and the inability of the law to do anything. These frustrations are bound to emerge in many ways and shoe throwing, in my views, is just a softer way.

Misuse of shoes by Hanmant Varudkar on 17 Apr 2009

It is deplorable that Advani faced the same unpleasent experience as Bush. This is a cheaper way to get publicity. The person doing such an act may not have a great philosophy or grievences. I think nobody should pay heeds to this act. This may be passed as breach in security; nothing more!

Shoe hurling on Advaniji by Najam Rahi on 17 Apr 2009

If the formula of shoes hurling to release ones mental tension and stress becomes successful and popular like this, the time is not far when people, from scholars to ordinary person, from top leaders to lowest workers, will be seen hitting themselves by their own shoes to release their stress and mental pressure, in private and public places, where ever the stress may become unbearable?

Why we need to live with "unclean" potential PMs by Barghad on 17 Apr 2009

Why we cannot have clean people as our potential PMs. Look at the potential candidates;1. Advani: Does anyone know status of criminal case against him (of Babri fame). He claimed to keep criminals away. Also "discharged" in Hawala case, not acquitted. First he should get clean chit before dreaming to become PM.2. Mayawati: Disproportionate Assets case (and dubious Taj case).3. Mulayam Singh: Disproportionate assets case ( old guesthouse case of Mayawati fame)Can't their parties project clean leaders as their candidates?3.

indvidual by Raj Pal Ahuja on 17 Apr 2009

Ihav nothing to say about this slipper trowing etc. This is all happening due to frustration in the general. We cannot avoid all this. The reason being these leaders are fighting to defame each other. They are all hungry for the chair and power invested in that chair. These politicians are nothing more than decoits. It is true that before 1947 we were slaves of British and now our own people are trying control power and make people slave worst than before. If you talk anything they are thereto take reveng from all of us.A common man has no right to speak. Most of the voters in the contry are from villages. These politicians use there power and money which they have already made and additional money which they foresee in next future. These parties should pick well qualified capable people to run the government. These people have no moral.it is good saying in politics "woh vadha hi kaya jo pura kiya jaya"

Shoe hurling spree by Geeta on 17 Apr 2009

LOL! People should be allowed to come to the conferences only if they are barefoot.

Is it new trend? by Sanjay on 17 Apr 2009

Before people were scared of politicians, now they seems so frustrated that such things are becoming norm. Maybe next time they will start to beat them. It seems that the public is unhappy with their netas. We must ask what is the disconnect that makes them unhappy, frustrated? Because this may trigger bigger things.

only the wearer knows where the shoe pinches by Kanwal Nain Singh on 16 Apr 2009

when a boot was thrown at P.Chitambrem, by a journalist, the BJP spared no moment to cash in the eventg by criticising the Congress for not doing any thing for 84riot victim. I would like to ask BJP why they could not do the justice when they were in power? Why did not they sent Jagdish Tytler etc.to jail? Now when a chappal was thrown at Advani than Congress was first to criticise the incident and even asked the media not to give coverage to this type of happenings. BJP should now behave and shed away their communal base and try to win the elections on common issues concerning people of this country.

shoe throwing upon L.K.Advani by Najam Rahi on 16 Apr 2009

Advaniji being an elderly person should be respected, not for his political views but age. The menace of shoe throwing is increasing day by day because the stress-stricken people are throwing shoes to the person disliked by them just to release their stress and anger. If this epidemic goes on, a day may come when people will be seen in private and public places, hitting themselves with their own shoes to release the stress and pressure. Because by then they will be disliking their ownself more than any body else for belonging to this world ruled by corrupts, criminals, hatefuls and terrorists, having left the comman man with no peace of mind?

slipper's power by bapoo on 16 Apr 2009

Advaniji should thank the gentleman who stuck to a slipper only instead of any weapon. Can Advaniji explain why is he engaged in word of war against PM as if there are no other issues before the nation? As an elderly statesman he should show some maturity in focusing on the core issues such as education, health, economy, infrastructure, agriculture, unemployment etc.. Just be a thorough gentleman Please.

Worst trends in Politics by Ram Ratan Singh on 16 Apr 2009

The shoe and Slipper that are thrown at our leaders are just the worst that is happenning in our country and other world. It seems that the person doing so is doing just for gaining the publicity as media is covering this news at the front page and the person get famous within minutes.Just I wish to say our countryman that please stop this type of act and behave yoursef. Those who are praising these acts should see withing themself and should notice that how amny shoes should be thrown at them.

So ,now Advani by narayanee on 16 Apr 2009

I don't read any frustration necessarily. While I don't support the shoe throwing, let us acknowledge the double speak of Advani on Ram and Jinnah.Mixing religion is not the copy right of Hindu leaders only but also Congress and its allies who always vie with each other to asscoiate with minorities, recap Varun episode.

Shoe throwing. by Jafar Zaidi on 16 Apr 2009

Dear Editor,Press and electronic media glorified Sardar Jarnail Singh who was a part of the press.Mr. Sanjiv Shrivasta on his colums in BBC/hindi had all praise for him. It is media which is encouraging such acts. What had been the consequences had a Muslim have done so in case of Mr. Advani. Prime Minister incumbent never spoken when their alliance parner Akali Dal announced prizes for this cowardice act. Thanks,Jafar Zaidi
