New Delhi, March 7: Sensing early elections, BJP sought to keep the Sethusamudram controversy alive with its Prime Ministerial face L K Advani attacking the Government for questioning the existence of Lord Ram.

"The characters of Ramayana are in the veins and blood of the people of the country and are their guiding lights. But the Government does not understand this," he said in the context of the affidavit filed by the Centre in the Supreme Court in September, 2007.

The affidavit said there was no evidence to suggest the existence of Lord Ram.

He said the Government would not say anything like this against any other community. "This sort of thing cannot happen in any other country, but only in India," he said addressing a women's conference.

Rejecting charges that the BJP was communal as it talks about Hindutva, Advani said even the Supreme Court has observed that Hindutva was not a narrow concept, but a way of life. "Ram is its symbol."

Advani also identified good governance, development and honest and ideal leadership as the party's planks to capture power at the Centre.

He spoke about the development achieved by Gujarat and asked all BJP and NDA ruled states to emulate this path.

Talking about BJP's role in the Indian politics, he said had the party not been there, the country would not have adopted the path which would herald 21st century as India's century.

No use blowing own trumpet by P.P. TALWAR on 08 Mar 2008

LK Advani, the Prime Ministerial candidate of the BJP, is hell-bent to distort the facts to gain political mileage. By refusing to accept the scientific and archeological findings, BJP stalwarts are trying to play with the religious sentiments of the people by raking up Sethusamundram issue. There is no use blowing own trumpet in declaring that had BJP not been there country would not have attained 21st century. In fact BJP's six years rule is full of instances where our counry has suffered, politically, economically and strategically. Kargil, hijacking of IC 814, and PAk sponsored terrorism gaining momentum all negate BJP's claim of their successful six years rule.

You are wrong, Mr Baalu! by Bharath on 08 Mar 2008

Union Minister for surface transport, T R Baalu has given a precedent of Narmada Bachao Aandolan (NBA), to defend his stance on the contentious issue of Ramar Sethu bridge. Obsessed with his views, the Minister has skipped the fact that NBA was pertaining to a local issue, where the affected people could have been rehabilitated. But the Sethu project is a national issue, where its demolition means irreparable damage to a cultural heritage. Besides, until recently not much money from the national exchequer has been used for this project. But, now the Minister is hurrying up with the work obtrusively to give a feeling that crores of rupees have been spent on the project, so that it can’t be withdrawn. The court’s ruling that no petition could be filed against a big project of national importance is being blatantly misused by the Minister and those who support the project

MK should be sent to Andaman by Indian on 08 Mar 2008

This has reference to the statement of Karunanidhi questioning whether Lord Rama was an engineer to construct Ramar Sethu. This is an absurd and irresponsible statement by a person in high position and we have to pity MK. All Hindus revere Lord Rama, accept him as God, worship him and we believe God neither requires MK’s engineering degree nor the assistance of his chelas to construct the Ramar Sethu. This shows the level to which our politiciansLet Tamil Nadu carry on with its development projects by all means, but not at the cost of religious fervour and beliefs. No problem has only one solution. Who is Karunanidhi to talk about Lord Rama or Hindu sentiments? Does he know the fondness and devotion with which we Hindus worship Rama and strongly believe that he is the incarnation of Lord Vishnu himself, who engineered not just a bridge but the entire universe?

The so-called secularists(Cong DMK CPI RJD..) must be taught HOW to respect the Hindu sentiments. by kumar on 08 Mar 2008

In the view of the Ram Sethu affidavit issue, it is shocking to see politicians and sections of the media treating Hindu sentiments casually. Once again our PM was out of the loop – this time in filing the affidavit by his government that Rama is a myth. The present case is an illustration of the UPA government's inability to show guts and acknowledge a mistake and address it. It is well known that the UPA government functions under the direction of Sonia Gandhi. If it gets bouquets then she receives them while brickbats are hurled at the others who form a firing line to protect her. When she realizes the opposition and fears that an issue would adversely impact a vote bank then she steps in to right the wrong and earns encomiums. Congress spokesman Abhishek Singhvi, who is good at verbal jugglery said, 'To err is human, but to rectify is divine', the ASI bureaucrats are humanized by receiving all the blame for the affidavit – but who is made divine? Divinity is a manifestation of godliness one wonders which god's divinity he has in mind. Even genuine objections expressed by the Hindus are dismissed as extremist, a stark contrast to the way minority issues are dealt with.

RAMASETHU by N.V.SANKARAN on 08 Mar 2008

Sir, Much has been written about the lack of historical proof of the existence of the Rama Sethu and the secular brigade and the left parties are blindly upholding the ASI report and supporting the TN Government on the issue. However, all the people who are seeking "historical proof" in this matter has forgotten a very important and basic fact. Irrespective of whether it was built by Sri Rama with the help of the monkey brigade or not, that it is mentioned in the epic Ramayana itself is proof enough of its existence at that time. It will not be logical to presume that the Rama Sethu was not existent at the time when the epic was written and is a natural formation happened later. If that were the case, how could the Ramayana have any reference to it? It is hard to think that the Aadi Kavi Valmiki just imagined its existence and it was formed later. Just as it is true that the Ramasethu exists today, it is also true that it was in existence at the time of writing of the epic. Yet there is no incontrovertible proof as the ASI had indicated that it was existing at that time except the reference in the Ramayana. If this much can be accepted, why can't it be accepted that it was built by Bhagwan Ram with the help of the monkey brigade as depicted in Ramayana? The only reason for the controversy is that it relates to Hindu religious beliefs. For these people, any belief in Hinduism is communalism and anathema. Simply put, this is nothing but anti-Hindu.

Next will be you by Hamid on 08 Mar 2008

First the attacked Muslims of Bengali Origin, Next Muslims from Kashmir, then all Muslims after the RAM Rath . Now its madrasa’s they are blindly ignorant of the fact that Kashmir has the highest level of terrorism and lowest level of Madrasas. They think Muslims have no brains; almost all Muslims live in their own areas protected by their numbers, despite the rant. Attacks on Dalits and now Muslims was okay - you let it happen – so now they will break the only concept of India – attack north Indians. They are foolish to expect a Nation based on Hindusim- it can never be, like there can be never a cross cultural Islamic nation. Watch Pakistan and the Arab fiefdoms – Language is a greater unifier or destroyer than religion – don’t ignore history. Ignore this at the nations peril.

Secularism Vs. Communal by Indian on 07 Mar 2008

In the whole world except in India, 'secularism' means 'equality to all religions, etc.' and 'communal' means 'bias towards or against a religion'. In India, 'secularism' means 'pleasing muslims and chritians by attacking Hinduism' and 'communalism' means 'Hindus asking for at least equality with Islam and Christianity'! If Advani says, don't divide the people along religious lines and give funds only to Muslims and Christians, give the funds to ALL or NONE, then he is branded 'communal'. What nonsense!
